Schools help families enroll in Covered California, Medi-Cal

With huge numbers of California children still uninsured, schools are beginning to take the lead in letting families know that affordable health care coverage is available.

In school libraries and courtyards from Sacramento to Los Angeles and beyond, trained enrollment counselors have been invited to set up folding tables, commandeer desk space and corral parents before the Feb. 15 sign-up deadline for Covered California, the state’s online health insurance marketplace created under the federal Affordable Care Act.

And the outreach will increase. Under a new state law, all California schools must include in their 2015-16 enrollment packets information about options for health care coverage and how to get help with the sign-up process. The law, Assembly Bill 2706, authored by Roger Hernández, D-West Covina, is intended to reduce the number of children who are eligible for health insurance subsidies but remain uninsured.

Schools are a natural partner for efforts to improve student health, advocates said. Schools are funded based on Average Daily Attendance figures, chronic absenteeism is closely tied to the physical and emotional well-being of families, and health insurance is a way to help students get the care they need to be ready to learn.

We all know that many of those being signed up are illegals.

BTW, the schools also push foodstamps, Section 8, TANF, and other welfare benefits. And they send the information home in Spanish and invite the parents to sign up for it. The pamphlet even says that illegals can sign up.

Looking forward to getting out of Mexifornia. My parents are in their 80’s and aren’t going anywhere,so things are on hold. Meantime we are able to keep our heads above water and managing to put away max on the 401k to fund our ultimate exodus. There will be plenty of popcorn to watch the annexation of the State in 20 - 30 years to The highest bidder.

Would probably be more efficient if they just did the signups in Mexico and Central America depending on the state selected for illegal entry.
