I believe “Jungle” primaries work to the advantage of the incumbents and or party elite. The message always is “come on get on board or we won’t even be in or possibly not have a runoff”. We’re much better off with a closed primary and let Republicans and Conservatives hold their primary and discuss their differences and let democrats have theirs.

I noticed Corker among them but I couldn’t remember later who was the new face..
If we had closed primaries, Corker wouldn’t stand a chance..however without them Corker can run and make a good showing in our primaries..even be TN’s “pick”

The TN Republican Party is rooted in the eastern regions, where it has spent the last 150 years fossilizing into a political machine like the Dems have in a big city.
When the Civil War began, eastern TN had no use for the Confederacy and they aligned with the Union-Republicans.

If there is so much worry about “crossover votes”, then allow only one candidate from any one party on the ballot.
1) Let the parties (through Conventions, Caucuses, etc.) select their candidate.
2) Any and all candidates for any office should be required to file (with affiliation, if any) for the primary to be eligible to be on the (run-off) election ballot.
3) Any candidate receiving more than 50% of the primary vote is elected. If no-one receives this simple majority, then the top two vote getters or the top 50% (in whole numbers, rounded up) of the field participate in a run-off. Repeat this selection process until a majority vote is attained.
4) During this election process, no candidate is allowed to change affiliation from that originally filed.
If this process was followed, then my taxes would not be used to winnow the Dem., or Rep. candidates (much less the Greens, Commies, Independent Party, Libertarian, Tea Party, or whatever). The election would more truly reflect the desires of the voters. IMHO, Bill Clinton was elected by Ross Perot (due to the protest vote against GHWB because Bush was so far ahead of that unknown from Ark.). And, I realize, this might result in two Dems or two Repubs or whatever being on the final ballot. If that’s a worry, then run a stronger candidate.
At present, I am a “Non-Affiliated” voter and, as such, am locked out of the primaries and am not allowed to vote for any of the primary candidates but am presented 10-12 candidates (for a single office) in the November election (a field which should have been cut down in the primary), and often includes candidates who lost in the primary and changed affiliation or office from President to Senate (for example) to get on the (Nov.) ballot.
The current system only insures that those currently in power stay in power.

If you notice, I didn’t say that jungle primaries were better than closed primaries; I don’t have experience of them and I wouldn’t know. But it just has to be better than an open primary with no contest on the Democrat side.I don’t think I would be induced to “get on board” a second-placing candidate in preference to voting for my preferred “third” candidate. After all, any vote not for the leading Democrat is as much a vote against installing that Democrat without a runoff as a vote for the favored-for-second) candidate wold be. Time enough for settling, after the “jungle primary” is over.
