Putin-backed rebels just made a huge move right under Europe's nose

On the eve of Angela Merkel and François Hollande's meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) made a concrete push for Putin's vision of eastern Ukraine.

The self-proclaimed, largely unrecognized DPR moved closer to unifying with the other region that has forcefully broken away by declaring itself the legal successor of a 1918 self-proclaimed Soviet republic.

"We, the deputies of the Donetsk People's Republic, aware of our responsibility before the past and paving the road for the future, proclaim the continuation of the tradition of the Donetsk-Krivoy-Rog Republic and announce that the state of Donetsk People's Republic is her successor," the memorandum stated, according to Gazeta.ru.

The Donetsk-Krivoy-Rog Republic declared independence from Ukraine on Feb. 12, 1918. And then, 36 days later, it was incorporated into the Ukraine Soviet Republic —

On Friday, the DPR's memorandum was sent over to another self-proclaimed state, Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), according to a report from Interfax. One of the leaders of the DPR, Andrei Purgin, noted ..."Memorandum on state-building and continuity of the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog republic will be adopted also in LPR," he said.

Further, the rebel regions are declaring themselves the successors of a Soviet region that included lands currently under control of Ukraine. Given that Russian troops and weaponry have helped rebels conquer more and more territory over the last six months, the military implications of the memorandum are alarming.

If Russian troops and rebels push further toward the historical boundaries of the Donestk-Krivoy-Rog Republic, they would need to conquer the strategically vital port city of Mariupol.

Taking Mariupol would connect the rebel-held regional capital Donetsk to the north, the sea, and the land route to the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in March.

And the city of 500,000 is vital for eastern Ukraine's exports, ...

Most people in Mariupol don't want anything to do with Putin.

Putin defenders will applaud if Putin takes Mariupol. Putin appeasers will shrug.

I saw another article saying that Merkel, Hollande and Putin had made “some progress” then I saw this. Maybe Putin was acting like he is interested in peace, knowing all along that this was happening.

Mariupol is an important industrial center for Ukraine, as is Kharkiv up north. Putin is not going to allow a Ukraine to exist that can rebuild and rearm itself

Merkel and Hollande and these Munich accords are offering Putin what he wants in exchange for “peace in our time”

The eastern half of Ukraine is very Russian. Many see themselves as part of Greater Russia. The people speak Russian, not Ukrainian. I don't see how Ukraine can win this one. Even if we armed Ukraine I'm afraid it wouldn't be enough.

Even ethnic Ukrainians who live east of the Dniester are Russified.

Their language, mentality and culture is Russian.

Cities like Donetsk, Lugansk, Dnepropetrovsk, and Kharkov are mainly Russophone.

For Moscow, that is an insuperable advantage.

“Mariupol is an important industrial center for Ukraine, as is Kharkiv up north. Putin is not going to allow a Ukraine to exist that can rebuild and rearm itself”

I said that on DAY ONE, a year ago.

Putin will put Russia in the position to control, or at least have primary influence, over the parts of Ukraine that have value after the coup, and leave the rest, which is a corrupted economic basketcase, to the Euros to finance.

The only thing these so-called “rebels” are good for is inflicting operational losses on the Ukrainian military truck fleet carrying the ammunition to and fro to kill them with.

As the obozo is proving that he is not only wanting America to fall, he seems to want to arm Ukraine in order to incite a US - Russia heavy arms conflict to help him in his quest to ensure the fall of America. Putin will be happy to oblige him, I'm sure because MAD is no longer a concern for Russia nor China for that fact due to obozo being in the WH and an obvious enemy of this country. Assuredly, Obozo will not retaliate when Russia strikes the East and West coasts of America with nukes. When it happens and if he boards AF 1 to escape or goes subterranean under DC, with any luck the military and Secret Service personnel that will be accompanying him realize then in truth what he is and what he has done and take up the matter with him personally.

Russia’s cooperation is needed to end the conflict.

Some form of federalization of Ukraine is inevitable.

There has to be full autonomy and provision for economic empowerment of all regions and their right to protect their language, culture and religious freedom.

I don’t see any other possible formula. Of course the West has to impress Poroshenko and Yasenyiuk with reality.

The country is fighting a war it can’t win.
