Net U.S. Job Gains Since The Recession Have Gone To Foreign-Born Workers

In the months and years since the recession began in December 2007, foreign-born workers have experienced a net increase in employment, while native-born Americans have experienced a net loss.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated employment data Friday.

The new BLS figures reveal that since the start of the recession in 2007 — which is said to have ended in June 2009 — the number of foreign workers employed in the United States rose by 1.7 million.

In December 2007 the number of foreign-born workers was 22,810,000 by January 2009 the number has increased to 24,553,000.

Meanwhile the number of American-born workers employed decreased by 1.5 million, from 123,524,000 to 121,999,000.

While the foreign-born and American-born population experienced different statistical employment fates, both categories of adults experienced net growth.

The numbers come as Congress continues to debate a Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill that would defund President Obama’s executive amnesty, which has opened the door for millions of illegal immigrants to legally work in the United States.

I remember when outsourcing started in ‘97 in Silicon Valley.
I was at a Kinkos getting passport updated and there was a guy from HP getting docs printed to setup a company to outsource jobs.

I only found out later it was HP jobs being outsourced to India.
HP has never recovered from the damage this did to its reputation.

My grandfather arrived from Italy in 1910, apprenticed to be a butcher, and opened his own shop eventually. Enter the depression.

My mother tells me the depression was a non event for her family of six. However many American born were in lines for food and unemployed. Ironically the immigrant mantra was get a good education, to become more American. Why? So you can be laid off the next economic downturn?

History repeats.

almost all the jobs appear to be going to immmigrants, not Americans

most electronics and science jobs seem to go to people from Communist China

most programming jobs seem to go to people from China or India

most trades and retail-support jobs seem to go to people from Mexico, etc.

Roger that. My Grandfather arrived in the US in 1919 with his two older brothers. With the few dollars they had in their pockets they opened a barber shop in North Philly. They were too busy learning English and studying for citizenship by the time the Depression came along.

The North Philly 'hood changed to "da 'hood" and they adapted with new jobs. I miss them...for many reasons, but mostly now to be able to tell them how much I admire them, thank them and to hear their stories filled with wisdom.

Why work when the plethora of welfare programs will let you live fairly well.

Democrat motto - Why buy the cow when you can get (steal) the milk for free?

When I lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2002, HP had a huge operation going on.
