Colorado Democrats block bill aiming to keep boys out of girls’ changing rooms

DENVER, Colorado, February 6, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- In the wake of allegations that a boy presenting himself as female harassed girls in a high school restroom, lawmakers in Colorado tried this week to walk back some of the damage done by the state’s controversial transgender bathroom law, which mandates that self-identified “transgender” individuals be allowed to use the bathroom and changing facilities of their choice, regardless of biological sex.

Rep. Kim Ransom, R-Littleton, introduced a bill that would have permitted facility operators to decide for themselves whether to permit cross-gender use of sex-segregated facilities, without putting themselves at risk of discrimination lawsuits. She argued that underage girls are at special risk of abuse and assault under the current law, which leaves no room for discretion on the part of the adults responsible for their health and safety.

“Locker rooms are vulnerable places,” Ransom told the committee. “If a group of high school boys wants to storm the girls locker room during shower time after gym class, there is nothing the principal can do to stop them if they say the right words.”

But the Democrat-led committee charged with evaluating Ransom’s proposal rejected it outright. They argued that allowing business owners to require self-identified “transgender” people to use the bathroom consistent with their biological sex is a violation of the privacy rights of transgender people, and a form of discrimination.

Rep. Joe Salazar, D-Thorton, compared Ransom’s bill to mid-20th century legislation barring Hispanics and blacks from using the same public restrooms as whites. “The reasons for non-desegregating in the 1950s and '60s was because Mexicans and blacks somehow were sexual perverts," Salazar said. "I'm offended by this bill because this is rinse and repeat prejudice.”

Ransom’s bill failed in a 7-to-4 committee vote, with one Republican crossing the aisle to vote against it. While transgender activists applauded the vote, some concerned parents said they were disappointed by the outcome.

"As a government it's an obligation to create … safe zones for children, so they don't have to have that fear that there's going to be people who game the system," said Kendal Unruh, a mother and teacher of American Government from Colorado Springs.

“I am extremely aware that when discrimination of any type happens to any type of person that it is a tragedy,” added Unruh. “That is not what this bill is going after. There has to be a boundary.”

I tend to agree with you. Being wired with the desire to take advantage of a loophole can't be held against them so much as held against the adults who voluntarily and purposefully created the loophole.

Hell, I was a teenage boy once and if someone had said that it was okay to wander around the girl's locker room and just say that I was confused if anyone asked, I would have done it and so would every other guy I knew.

I don't even think it's so much about morals, teenagers (especially boys) are preoccupied with sex.

And, while not necessarily perverts, nearly all teenage boys would take advantage of this given the opportunity.

They'll think they got a free pass to Heaven on earth.

The law has no business telling kids what sex they are.

"That's awful! I mean, why would any normal boy want to go into the girls'...changing..."

Thong panties, lacy bras, pretty legs, firm butts. Naw, any normal teenage boy wouldn't be interested.

Alternate suggestion: gut the public education system (a la Wisconsin and/or Michigan), cut its financial supply lines, eradicate the teachers’ unions, and turn every last school into a charter school and/or other private school.

That still wouldn’t solve the idea of large numbers of voters dumb enough to keep these morally and intellectually scrambled people in office, though.

Bathrooms aren’t about ‘gender’. They are about plumbing.
If you got the wrong kind plumbing in your pants STAY OUT.

If you had told me, as a high school sophomore, that I could join the girls in the gym showers and all I had to do was mouth some legalese, I’m afraid I would have been part of the obvious problem with this insane legislation.

Unfortunately, it is a lost cause for us. We are swimming in a sea of liberalism.

Exactly, and would you want your wife, daughter or mother to have to deal with some perv while they are using the restroom? Heck no.

When the public transportation system in Boston got their first voluntary mutilation employee, male-minus-male-organs, the women didn't want s/he using their bathroom, and men as well had a problem with being accused of any potential graffiti, so a third bathroom was installed (at taxpayer/rider expense...)

Don't know what it was labelled (George Costanza?).

Come to think of it, about a decade ago, a female "turning male" was texting, against regs, while operating a subway trolley, and crashed it into the back over another trolley, sending people to the hospital, and lawyers, and causing $10M+ in asset damage. Her "male" name was "Aiden Quinn".

I agree. Especially because when you can legitimately storm the girls' showers, it takes half the fun out of it! Let the kids find a way to do it illegitimately, like we did when we were growing up! (Well, at least the guys in "Porky's" did and we all imagined we could have pulled it off too)

Since people are big on issuing statements instead of taking action, perhaps parents should notify Salazar and his cohorts that the day a girl is harmed because a pervert posed as a transgender, that very day he will be arrested for the crime.

And then do it.

Wanna bet that any of Salazar’s female relatives will ever be in a place that they would have to deal with a he/she or predator in the women’s bathroom? Would Salazar himself?

OTOH, maybe he’d like that.....

This is still America right?

Hell, I am sure many of us as teenagers would have used just about any excuse to get into the Girls Locker room/showers.

Funny; I remember when the masculine lesbian gym teacher at our junior high school used to separate the boys and girls who slow-danced too close at the sock hops. I remember her incredibly hypocritical glare of moral condemnation, at which we snickered, knowing she was "sharing a house" with the feminine lesbian gym teacher (not an easy thing to get away with in the 50s; but they were in a liberal suburb of DC). I also remember one of the young English teachers overturning her study hall punishments of the "offending" close-dancers and snickering right along with us, because it was the lumbering, lisp-spitting, mannish lesbian who had been so morally outraged.

To be fair, it could be that she believed all lesbians should remain virgins until married, and not dance too close to other lesbians in junior high school, assuming they could have "gay married" at the time. Yeah, that's probably it.
