DENVER, Colorado, February 6, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- In the wake of allegations that a boy presenting himself as female harassed girls in a high school restroom, lawmakers in Colorado tried this week to walk back some of the damage done by the states controversial transgender bathroom law, which mandates that self-identified transgender individuals be allowed to use the bathroom and changing facilities of their choice, regardless of biological sex.
Rep. Kim Ransom, R-Littleton, introduced a bill that would have permitted facility operators to decide for themselves whether to permit cross-gender use of sex-segregated facilities, without putting themselves at risk of discrimination lawsuits. She argued that underage girls are at special risk of abuse and assault under the current law, which leaves no room for discretion on the part of the adults responsible for their health and safety.
Locker rooms are vulnerable places, Ransom told the committee. If a group of high school boys wants to storm the girls locker room during shower time after gym class, there is nothing the principal can do to stop them if they say the right words.
But the Democrat-led committee charged with evaluating Ransoms proposal rejected it outright. They argued that allowing business owners to require self-identified transgender people to use the bathroom consistent with their biological sex is a violation of the privacy rights of transgender people, and a form of discrimination.
Rep. Joe Salazar, D-Thorton, compared Ransoms bill to mid-20th century legislation barring Hispanics and blacks from using the same public restrooms as whites. The reasons for non-desegregating in the 1950s and '60s was because Mexicans and blacks somehow were sexual perverts," Salazar said. "I'm offended by this bill because this is rinse and repeat prejudice.
Ransoms bill failed in a 7-to-4 committee vote, with one Republican crossing the aisle to vote against it. While transgender activists applauded the vote, some concerned parents said they were disappointed by the outcome.
"As a government it's an obligation to create safe zones for children, so they don't have to have that fear that there's going to be people who game the system," said Kendal Unruh, a mother and teacher of American Government from Colorado Springs.
I am extremely aware that when discrimination of any type happens to any type of person that it is a tragedy, added Unruh. That is not what this bill is going after. There has to be a boundary.
Hell, I was a teenage boy once and if someone had said that it was okay to wander around the girl's locker room and just say that I was confused if anyone asked, I would have done it and so would every other guy I knew.
I don't even think it's so much about morals, teenagers (especially boys) are preoccupied with sex.
They'll think they got a free pass to Heaven on earth.
The law has no business telling kids what sex they are.
Thong panties, lacy bras, pretty legs, firm butts. Naw, any normal teenage boy wouldn't be interested.
no - no - no....DemoRats created this monster...they said everything has to be equal - no suppression of a trans-sexual person...let’s see where this monster goes from this point on...I think they are now seeing a blacklash from the average US Citizen and are realizing there is no open door to do whatever they wanted...let them keep committing political suicide!
Alternate suggestion: gut the public education system (a la Wisconsin and/or Michigan), cut its financial supply lines, eradicate the teachers’ unions, and turn every last school into a charter school and/or other private school.
That still wouldn’t solve the idea of large numbers of voters dumb enough to keep these morally and intellectually scrambled people in office, though.
Bathrooms aren’t about ‘gender’. They are about plumbing.
If you got the wrong kind plumbing in your pants STAY OUT.
If you had told me, as a high school sophomore, that I could join the girls in the gym showers and all I had to do was mouth some legalese, I’m afraid I would have been part of the obvious problem with this insane legislation.
Unfortunately, it is a lost cause for us. We are swimming in a sea of liberalism.
Exactly, and would you want your wife, daughter or mother to have to deal with some perv while they are using the restroom? Heck no.
Don't know what it was labelled (George Costanza?).
Come to think of it, about a decade ago, a female "turning male" was texting, against regs, while operating a subway trolley, and crashed it into the back over another trolley, sending people to the hospital, and lawyers, and causing $10M+ in asset damage. Her "male" name was "Aiden Quinn".
Since people are big on issuing statements instead of taking action, perhaps parents should notify Salazar and his cohorts that the day a girl is harmed because a pervert posed as a transgender, that very day he will be arrested for the crime.
And then do it.
Wanna bet that any of Salazar’s female relatives will ever be in a place that they would have to deal with a he/she or predator in the women’s bathroom? Would Salazar himself?
OTOH, maybe he’d like that.....
And who's surprised at this??????
Another reason to homeschool if ever I saw one.
These Democrats are the perverts.
They literally want boys and girls showering together
This is still America right?
Hell, I am sure many of us as teenagers would have used just about any excuse to get into the Girls Locker room/showers.
What a crazy society we now have.
To be fair, it could be that she believed all lesbians should remain virgins until married, and not dance too close to other lesbians in junior high school, assuming they could have "gay married" at the time. Yeah, that's probably it.
So school in Colorado will be like Porky’s. Except no peep holes, and no Beulah Ballbricker.
