The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Tuesday voiced concern over reports of mass book-burning in Iraq, saying it would be one of the most "devastating" such actions in history if confirmed.
Referring to reports that thousands of books on philosophy, law, science and poetry have been torched in recent weeks, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said it was part of a campaign of "cultural cleansing," reports AFP.
"If confirmed, this would be one of the most devastating acts of destruction of library collections in human history," UNESCO said.
"Such destruction is a cruel reminder that the nations of the world must remain united to combat such fanaticism today," Bokova added.

From Wikipedia:
The destruction of the Library of Alexandria ended the Library of Alexandria, one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world.[1] The library is famous for having been burned, resulting in the loss of many scrolls and books, and has become a symbol of "knowledge and culture destroyed". Although there is a tradition of the burning of the Library at Alexandria, the library may have suffered several fires or acts of destruction, of varying degrees, over many years. Different cultures may have blamed each other throughout history, or distanced their ancestors from responsibility, and therefore leaving conflicting and inconclusive fragments from ancient sources on the exact details of the destruction.
Ancient and modern sources identify four possible occasions for the partial or complete destruction of the Library of Alexandria: Julius Caesar's fire during his civil war in 48 BC; the attack of Aurelian in AD 270 275; the decree of Coptic Pope Theophilus in 391 AD; and the Muslim conquest of Egypt in (or after) AD 642.[2]
I guess burning people doesn’t matter that much.
Limbaugh, Hannity, and Levin have all been saying it feels like 1938 again.
Dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.
WWRTLHD (What Would Richard the Lion Hearted Do)? Boil da Muzzie b*tches in bacon grease.
The Inquisition burned people and condemned books. These idiots are 500 years behind times.
“Ende menschen”? Voos maint doos?
The savages in ISIS share many Nazi traits. Book burning is low on the list.
There is a new, shiny Library of Alexandria, but of course the scrolls can never be replaced.
Now just a cotton pickin’ minit here. Let’s be fair. The Soviet Union worked people to death in the frozen North and condemned books. Has ISIS/DAESH worked anybody to death in the frozen North yet? Huh? Huh? Huh? Well, that proves that they’re better than the Soviets, because they haven’t yet conquered Alaska. So there.
I read in the last few days the thugs emptied out Mosul’s library to take away for burning. Only Islamic texts left.
I can support burning over half of all books in existence, such as ‘50 shades of Gray’ and CRAP like that! (Just thought I’d shake up the thread a bit).
In the Middle East that is like, what, a bonfire of dozens of books?
Their books suck anyway. No sex.
I know, as the distance from Nazis burning books in the 1930s gets closer to a 100 years ago, the idea that someone is burning books, or throwing them in the dumpster, seems less shocking.
I have about 10,000 books with hardly any fiction among them, and no one seems interested in them.
I find it ironic that this book burning is occurring in an area once considered the “Cradle of Civilization.”
The “disease” of Islam has reduced the people of this area to a lower degree of civilization than they were 5,000 years ago, and the disease is spreading at pandemic levels.
Reading is “un-Islamic” don’tcha know. So is everything else that results in human progress.
Calvin burned people and books. There were some bad times in Christianity, but none of them came from the Scriptures or even from the teaching of the Church - they were all human corruption.
The difference is that in the case of Islam, this stuff is enshrined in their scriptures. The Old Testament is very violent and cruel, too, but Jews certainly didn’t take it as a model for behavior and instead looked for the meaning behind the stories and adhered to the fundamental Mosaic law. Granted, they got obsessed with ritual law (which Islam copied from them), but the whole point of Jesus’ preaching was that the moral law wasn’t just ritual fulfillment, but adherence to the Law revealed to Moses.
Islam is a bizarre syncretist cult founded by a loony who was looking to justify his criminality and violence and sexual depravity. It came into a world where both Christians and Jews were in fragile condition, riven by heresies, and where there was no longer one single secular authority, as there had been with the Romans.

My favorite beverage just escaped through my nose :-)
Thanks! :-)
