Delta Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Pilot Locked Out of Cockpit [5 days ago]

A Delta Air Lines flight heading from Minneapolis to Las Vegas was forced to make an emergency landing today after the pilot was locked out of the cockpit, airport officials said.
The call about Flight 1651 came in around 12:10 p.m. and the plane landed safely at McCarran International Airport around 12:25 p.m., officials told ABC affiliate KTNV.
The cockpit door malfunctioned, locking the pilot out of the cockpit, airport officials told KTNV, noting that the first officer made the landing.

Big deal. Even if the first officer had almost no experience whatsoever, autopilots are sophisticated enough to land planes.

The first officer would have been type rated in the MD-80 and in possession of a ATP rating.
Just guessing, but probably in excess of 2000 hrs. flight experience.

This kind of thing has happened to a lot of us, but not at this level, so that we will be remembered for it.
It’s a little like the guy that was drinking and crashed his drone, a simple enough mistake, but his happened to land at the White House.

Using the ILS system the plane lands itself. All the co-pilot needed to do was punch in the correct numbers and hit a few switches in the proper order which he is already quite well trained to do.

If it was that easy, you would be flying for Delta. “All” is a lot more than you imagine. You talk as if flying is as easy as using an elevator. What speed would you fly on final? What configuration of flaps? AND, only a few of the airplane types are capable of autolanding. Not all ILS systems are autoland certified. Enuff?

On a scheduled flight to Las Vegas, is it really an emergency landing when you land in Las Vegas?
I can imagine the pilot knocking on the door and a falsetto cartoon voice inside saying, “Who isssss it?” “C’mon Bob, open the door. People are starting to notice out here.”
