Missouri Democrat wants to require ID for every Apple Pay payment
MacDailyNews ^ | January 23, 2014

A Missouri lawmaker is pushing a measure that would require identification each time a person uses Apple Pay with their iPhone or other mobile payment systems on their non-Apple phones. “Democratic Rep. Joshua Peters of St. Louis says the bill he introduced Wednesday requires customers to show a state driver’s license or other identification when they use a mobile wallet app or other electronic payment system...

... “Merchants would have to record the license or identification number or could be responsible for the illegal purchases made if a device is reported stolen.”

Jeez, 'RATS never tire of trying to lay intrusive and burdensome requirements on America's citizens.

The stupid "RAT likely doesn't even understand that the user's fingerprint is required to trigger an Apple Payment.

That’ll slow up the instant payment scheme!

That said, I haven’t been excited by using my mobile phone for NFC contact payments. How hard is it to pull a card out of my wallet?

And guess what? He’s a “Holder’s Person.” I guess he knows “his people” will try to use this technology to cheat “whitey.”

I suspect this has more to do with preserving cashier jobs than it does protecting consumers.

Wow...excellent point! I hadn’t thought about that angle; it makes his proposal even more stupid or, at least, hypocritical.

And that’s why I will never use it. Pull my phone out of the slot in my handbag or the debit card I keep in the slot right next to it.

The stupid "RAT likely doesn't even understand that the user's fingerprint is required to trigger an Apple Payment.

Not only that, but if the phone is stolen or lost, Apple enables the user to completely disable the Apple Pay app through iCloud.

Enabling “Lost” mode via iCloud erases tokens, making payment impossible.

Meanwhile, Mobile Payments are a gigantic, unstoppable worldwide development, amazingly complex, with lots of new and established players. The whole thing is evolving rapidly and quite fascinating -- a beautiful brilliant example of the free market dynamic of creative destruction.

True, the financial sector is highly regulated globally and domestically. But the mobile payment/retail payment industry is developing entrepreneurally the way the Internet did in the late 1990s.

Leave to an ignorant inexperience fool like Josh Peters to try and legislate things about which he knows nothing.

I'll bet he doesn't even know about Money 2020

There is NOTHING in Peters' backgroun that would prepare him to have any understanding whatsoever about the coming revolution in payments, or any other type of business.

Peters is the next generation Dick Durbin, who in his colossal ignorance threw the card/payments business into complete chaos with his Durbin Amendment" to Dodd Frank. I know, because I was at the card payments industry trade conference in Orlando when his Amendment was announced, and saw the complete turmoil that was created by changing the whole industry's revenue model.

You are right about that. That is one reason why mobile payment adoption hasn't yet taken off. But it will, and soon (next 18-24 months), because of security issues inherent in cards.

Payment security breaches can't really be addressed until the cards go away, even with EMV (chip & pin) technology. That will take time. But it is inevitable.

It’s not difficult at all. But the prime reason (there are many others) I like Apple Pay is for its security aspects. With Apple Pay, the merchant (and the clerk and the merchant’s databases) NEVER sees or gets your card/bank information. So if I buy something from Target and Target later has a data breach, I will NOT be one of the customers whose bank card and ID data is lost to the data thieves.

So, you want stricter requirements on electronic payments than on true credit card payments? Methinks someone connected to the insane CurrenC product wrote this guy a big fat check....
