Hartford state rep. apologizes for parking in handicapped space

A state representative from Hartford is taking some heat for parking in a handicapped space.

An iWitness snapped a photo of the personal car driven by Rep. Brandon McGee with his state-issued license plate parked in the spot at a Dunkin' Donuts on Capitol Avenue, across the street from the State Capitol.

The picture was taken Friday.

McGee said he issued an apology on his Facebook page.

"Thank you for holding me accountable. The other day (Friday to be exact) I made my usual run to D&D and was in a hurry... parked in a handicap parking space... Major no-no. So for the record, I respect the disabled and people in general. What I should have don was NOT park in a handicap parking space."

He said he was inside of the Dunkin' Donuts for three minutes while picking up something to eat, after not eating anything all day. However he said that is not an excuse.

"As an elected official (I) shouldn't be doing it, so I was wrong," McGee said.

People parking in handicapped spots when they are not allowed to is a problem many at the Capitol Avenue Dunkin' Donuts said they have seen before.

"We oversee many of the state agencies that deal with all types of social services which makes me even more embarrassed that I would do such a thing," he said.

McGee is the assistant majority leader and serves the 5th Assembly District of Windsor and Hartford. According to his website, he recently took the oath of office for his second term Jan. 7. He was also recently appointed as vice chair of the Human Services Committee.

Chemotherapy? That’s mine. I can sit just fine. I can drive fine. But walking is another issue. I don’t have the energy to walk around. Except for the fact that I’m bald though, you wouldn’t know.

Kidney disease. I’m not going to sit here and spoon feed you possible scenarios though.

“Walmart has a LOT of handicapped spaces too. So when I’m hobbling in, I take a look, and I call and report two vehicles with no placard hanging, or showing, and no tag designation.”

Carry one of these in your pocket. If you just loosen the tire core valve a bit the tire leaks and deflates with no permanent damage to the tire or so I am told. In the words of Dear Leader “If you like your illegal parking space you can keep your illegal parking space for a long time at least till a tow truck or the police arrive, which ever comes first.

I know people on chemotherapy. I haven’t seen a one for whom “walking is another issue” hobbling out of their SUV in the handicap space.

I’m not saying there aren’t cases like yours. I’m just saying I don’t see any of them.

I observe people who park in handicap spaces all the time. I’m sure there are some rare cases I’ve missed. I’m just saying that most - if not all - of those I’ve seen are just as healthy as I am, and no more need a handicap space than I do.

What does the fact that you’ve got a legitimate excuse do to undermine my observation? If you’ve got a legitimate reason to use a handicap space, great. My hat’s off to you, and I’m glad you can take advantage of them.

But you’re not really going to argue that just because you actually need a handicap space, there aren’t a lot of people who get them who don’t actually need them, are you?

Why should my observation cause offense to you?

"Sometimes I get out of my car and don’t need my cane that day. "

Then you don't need the handicap spot, either. Be decent and take a regular spot.

And you not knowing what on earth their problem could be doesn't mean that they don't need one. Of course their are those who are using their mom or dad's placard. But whether you see or not, the handicap could surely be there.
Let me explain one thing. My first chemo made me very wobbly, I couldn't walk without holding on to someone or some thing. This chemo though, I'm not as wobbly, but am usually extremely fatigued. You just don't know how it is.
ok, enough said. I'm done.

Ha ha—not a bad idea: special parking spaces for the portly—at the back of parking lots.

I have degenerative disc disease and have trouble walking any distance. I get out and walk into the store just fine. It’s when I come out that my leg is dragging and I am hurting from walking around the store. I refuse to use their electric carts.

You know I pulled into a store parking lot just a half hour ago and some young man had just pulled into the last handicapped space. Now there were open spaces all over. But he hopped out of his souped up Mustang and ran into the store, nervously looking back over and over at his car. So I called the police. He came out and said “they’re not going to do anything when I move my car” and I said “at least you’ll move your car” and he did. And I thought of you, Steely Tom! haha. And you know what else? He APOLOGIZED as we were waited on and I left. And I told him that I hoped he’d never HAVE to use a handicapped space, because it was hell. I appreciate that he apologized.

Sounds like basically a nice young man. He’ll probably go places in life.

So unusual for people to apologize for anything these days. Obama has taught them to “double down” (which is really a variation on Joseph Goebbels “big lie” concept, when you think about it).
