Putin Cuts Off Gas Supply To Six European Countries Without Warning
Forbes ^ | 1/18/2015 @ 4:03PM | Paul Gregory

Posted on 01/18/2015 2:50:54 PM PST by dila813

On January 14, Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s natural gas monopoly, Gazprom, to cut back by 60% the natural gas delivered to Europe through Ukraine. His ostensible reason: Ukraine was illegally siphoning off gas for its own use—a charge Ukraine denies. Overall Europe depends on Russia for 30% of its gas supplies, and some 80% of Europe’s Russian natural gas comes via Ukraine. Putin’s order would leave six countries in eastern and southeastern Europe totally without gas.

This article, which Forbes pulled, was written by a Ukranian who will likely never write for Forbes again. It pulls together disparate facts to create an anti-Russian diatribe. We shouldn’t waste our time commenting on fantasy, which this is.

I figured this was going to be his move. Punish the Euros for siding with the Homo in Sodom on the Potomac.

LNG comes into the Boston area (Everett)——a very densely populated area.

I certainly hope it’s not dangerous.

His budget this year was based on $125 per barrel of oil. With it down around $48.00 or so, he is in deep doggie poop. He is going to have to cause havoc to keep the wolves in Moscow off his butt. He has an army to feed and pay. He has billions tied up in remaking his military. So, he is going to do something to punish the Euros. He cannot touch the USA short of war. But he can punish the Euros with no natural gas, in the middle of a wickedly cold winter.

It would be good for us, but imagine the hoops we would have to go through to establish the infrastructure to ship LNG by ship to the EU in the quantities that replace a pipeline. And LNG by ship is way more dangerous and expensive. But it would be good for us if we could get the environuts out of the way.

Yes, I would think it would be more expensive for Europe to receive shipments of LNG from the US.

However Russia doesn't have the means to deliver LNG to China at this point.

My point is, if Russia shuts down LNG to parts of Europe, they can not immediately pivot and send it off to China.

“Linky, Last Putin Gas Story I could find was 10/16/2014, and that was just threats.”

There was one story last week...but very little in the media. Thanks for posting this.

I am reading a book called “Cauldron”...

Its a “Tom Clancey-ish” type story...It talks a little bit about this as a lead in for more interesting developments...

I have no idea what your motive is here. But my hunch is you being an idiot is a clear factor.

Do me a favor and don’t waste my time anymore...Find someone else babble idiocy to.

I see you got stuck in a Paulistian zero hedge nutball here.

I believe the only new “news” is a Russian threat to cut gas to the EU around 2020 when the current contracts expire. Russia is broke and are trying to get the EU to pay for the new pipe. EU wants a competitive pipeline and obviously Putin does not.

“Russia doesn’t have the means to deliver LNG to China at this point.”

They don’t need to send liquefied gas. A normal pipeline would be easy to China. And China has the money, know how, and need for it.

In China, homes and offices burn coal for heat. I expect most of its air pollution problems come from small, inefficient and dirty heating systems, rather than power plants.

There is no pipeline now.

A pipeline from Russia's closest field to China is still years away.

Which is why I make the point, that the Russia can't immediately pivot west to China and won't be able to until next decade.

Forbes pulled the story. False report.

And it makes sense that the story is false.

How could Russia at this point afford to stop selling natural gas?

No -way- it’d take a decade. But strategically thinking, a Russian should see that the EU is moving east and bringing NATO behind it, and that the EU intends to try to do to Putin exactly what they did to the president of Ukraine.

So a wise Russian would tighten belts now, get it done, and then have options if the EU gets more demanding. As bad as it is for the EU to depend on Russia for its supplies, its that bad for Russia to be tied to one main customer that is hostile and has spent a decade undermining you.

But it remains to be seen what will happen. I think the natural outcome is Israel will supply more to the EU, and Russia will turn towards China. And Obama will be over in the corner, worried sick about global warming.
