A group of Republican women is trying to pressure GOP leadership to make changes to a 20-week abortion ban the House is set to vote on next week.
Led by Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina, the female GOP lawmakers are protesting language in the legislation that requires rape victims to report their assault to police to qualify for an exemption under the law.
The legislation would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a measure that Republicans argue is broadly popular with Americans and offers a common-sense way to limit abortion rights.
The legislation was introduced by Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks. Ellmers office did not respond to a question for a comment, but a Republican staffer involved in the discussion said at least six lawmakers raised the issue with Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) during a closed-door meeting Tuesday.

Without the requirement the law would be gutless.
What are the women who want to kill their babies asking for? Do they want more or less time to file their requests. The article didn’t say.
If the woman wants to kill the baby, she has obligation to report the crime to police. How else will the offender be prosecuted?
Poorly written. I assume they want the clause removed and there be no exemption. Not sure why you would need an exemption. Im confused.
So offer this compromise: As long as they will sign a statement stating that they were too dumb to understand that even forced sex provided the possibility of pregnancy, they can get an exemption. But in return, they also have to forfeit their right to vote, drive or do anything else requiring more than that low level of intelligence.

Joe Straus will likely try to kill the bill anyway
Probably should be multiple police reports.
One, for the rape. Two, for the intent to murder. Perhaps a third, after the deed.
CBS August, 2012: Romney reverts back to pro-abortion after winning the nomination.
PELLEY: Well, the platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are?
ROMNEY: No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. Im in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.
Progs will work incrementally to get where they want to go.
Some on the right feel that's too unprincipled.
C’mon guys. What are you worried about? Women *NEVER* lie about rape. [/sarcasm]
If the woman wants to kill the baby is lying about being a rape victim, she is almost certain to drag an innocent man into it, or use it to settle old scores. Even if she says she didn’t know the rapist and describes a generic stranger, some poor schlub will wind up arrested and charged.
Ask the Lena Dunham republican club guy “rapist”. Ask the Duke Lacrosse team.
This is a bad idea. Make it illegal, but these half assed measures will send innocent men to prison and the woman can lie just as easy to a cop as to a doctor.
Wars are won in a series of battles, battles in which there are casualties, even by the winner of any battle, and even by the final victor. The 20-week rule is an “advance” in the pro-life position. That there may be some exceptions, and with them the 20 week rule advances, is MUCH better than the 20 week rule not advancing. Once the 20 week rule is won, some warriors can continue a battle against any exceptions, and they will have a history of experience with the 20 week rule to go by as well.
