To play devil’s advocate, they may have been saying it because they knew they were going to crash and there wasn’t anything they could do about it.

allahu akhbar (our god is greater) is more of a victory cry.
insha'allah (as god wills) would be more appropriate in your scenario.
I believe in that case they would have possibly said “Inshallah” which I think means “It’s God’s will.”
But I could be wrong.
