Maybe in yours but most states certain property is exempt from seizure in garnishment/bankruptcy proceedings.
That’s always been the rule. You’re talking about recouping from people who will probably never win the lottery in their lives.
The government would probably spend more than it would take in increased revenue.
Even in Maine a claim of hardship by the estate would routinely result in the state waiving its right to recover.
Obamacare = slavery, for many.

A better explanation about how this puts everyone at risk except the elite.
One thing that seems clear about the current health care debacle is the control the health care industrial complex and the government will have over my assets. And there seems to be no way around it. Tell me if I am wrong to believe this. It will help me sleep at night.
I am being told that I must have Medicare and an insurance overlay or pay penalties. I pay extra for the overlay. If for some reason I cannot pay for the overlay, and require care I will be put on Medicaid, and given care and my assets forfeited to the state/healthcare complex.
Now I understand that this has been a way to manage folks with small assets, in our community giving a house to the town for taxes and bills has been common for years. Our towns use to let the elderly live in their houses until after the death, then foreclose.
However the current combination of insurers, healthcare entities, and government can provide a very different picture. The government has opened a window to previously untapped assets, older people who have previously been able to cover their healthcare insurance, keep their assets intact and provide a boost for the next generation.
It seems to me that all the government/insurer axis needs to do is change the insurance price point depending on the financial needs of the insurer or healthcare institution. Less people able to afford, more assets turned over.
The other part, is how prices in healthcare do not reflect reality but instead, a very unrealistic and non market based assumption. I see it in my own pricing for services in the market.
Now I am not opposed to paying for my own healthcare, but I damned sure refuse to be subjected to or pay unrealistic, manipulated and dictated prices, which affects everything from equipment, prescriptions and services.
Both these issues combine to provide a perfect storm of assets to be sucked out of the middle class. I would really like your opinion here.
JGoodman: You have provided a very good description of both problems.
I don’t wanthink to speak for dr, but I read that as extreme sarcasm.
I don’t think so.
Ask the Rats. It is their policy. They want the poor to suffer.
Rats will do everything to make all suffer. Dickensian policies fit that perfectly.
. . . and how many of those unfortunate low income workers vote for the One in hopes that he was truly the welfare messiah?
I know. The Rats want maximum suffering. Sounds like it is all coming together for them.
All part of the plan.
Our son has pretty close to zero assets and has been dubbed ineligible for medicaid (despite inoperable cancer) because his "household income is too high. he is rooming with 2 others who now foot all the bills, but haven't kicked him to the curb yet.
We're trying to get him into ObamaCare to see if they also put him in Medicaid, but he hasn't the resources to make the insurance/deductible payments.
Since he began treatment prior to his job/insurance running out, the doctors say they cannot deny him treatment despite his inability to pay. If he was only an illegal...
I thought Obamacare was supposed to provide Health insurance to the 30,40 or 50 million people who did not have it.
Depends on who you were listening to what number it was,you can probably believe the 50 million number since the person who was the go to expert from Harvard who became a millionaire telling everyone this was so great,so he must be the one,Jonathan Gruber. So this story saying it was supposed to lower the cost of insurance for people was the LIE being sold by the So called expert Gruber and repeated ad nauseam by the Liar in chief.
The crap called Obamacare sucks,if you force insurance companies to pay for procedures, cover people with pre existing conditions it is NOT INSURANCE IT IS WELFARE,At least be honest about it
One of the biggest lies of the Obama care fiasco is that the government initially used healthcare and insurance interchangeably to get people thinking that they were actually getting insurance when it is only actually healthcare that they are promising. The insurance companies have been coopted to get their cooperation. But insurance as we know it, is leaving the building
For sure - just got word that our son's ObamaCare would cost $500/month with $6500 out of pocket. He has zero assets and won't get his first SS disability check until May. Cobra would have been cheaper.
It looks like he will be uninsured since the doctors/hospitals say they can't refuse to treat him if he has no insurance. We can't afford to foot the bills for his care, especially since it purchases nothing he won't already get. Too bad he doesn't speak Spanish - we could throw away his ID and get him good care w/o the extra hassle...

With SSDI he will be put on Medicare by the hospitals and healthcare providers.
He's been approved SSDI, but the first check doesn't come until May - hopefully Medicare will, in fact, kick in because Medicaid says he's not eligible.
