I can't think of any basis for the belief that a U.S. leader has some kind of moral obligation to show up at a political rally in a foreign country. I can't even compile a picture in my mind of Ronald Reagan doing such a thing ... in France, of all places.
It was a selfie rally. Nothing more.
I’ve been a bit confused by this too. It would have been too much of a pain to have gone to this. The amount of security and logistics would have been a waste of tax money.
But I’m not going to stand in the way of the firing squad.
I absolutely disagree with Cruz on this, and I'm surprised there aren't more conservatives who see it this way. You get no argument from me. After all this turned out to be a huge apology-fest with Euro-trash leaders falling all over themselves repeating the same old Obama; "We are not at war with Islam, blah, blah, blah..."
I agree with this. Since this rally was basically about freedom of expression, which is central to our Constitution, I can see that the US should express some sort of support. But Obama had already done that verbally. If the president of the US had shown up with Secret Service protection, etc., this would have been a distraction and disruption for the rally. Plus the president of the US has more important tasks than taking 2 or 3 days off to put in a symbolic appearance.
If Cruz were already president he would not have gone to Paris. But since he's just running for president he decided to use this as an issue.
