At the start of the last Congress, John Cornyn wrote an editorial titled Partial Government Shutdown May Be Needed to Restore Fiscal Sanity. Hes singing a different tune today.
Ive evolved, the Texas Republican and newly minted Senate majority whip said in an interview last week with CQ Roll Call.
For starters, the memory of the 2013 shutdown over Obamacare instigated by his fellow Texas senator, Ted Cruz, remains fresh.
Part of wisdom is to learn from your experiences, and I think we learned the hard way that shutdowns are not well received by the American people, Cornyn said. And honestly were in a different position now because were in the majority so we have the responsibility to govern.
To that end, Cornyn, like Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, is focused on showing the Republicans can bank some accomplishments early.
I think its important that we demonstrate that we can be productive before we have the inevitable fight over repealing Obamacare, Cornyn said.
He said his colleagues should also heed the advice of recently retired Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.: Dont surprise the leadership with disagreements.
We all understand weve got different perspectives and different opinions. But, if people know about it ahead of time, then they can adjust at least prepare themselves, he said. People are entitled they got independently elected by the voters, and they have every right to their point of view and their vote up here.
Cornyns already looking ahead to the burden of raising the debt ceiling always a politically toxic vote, but one that typically rests with the majority party.
Cornyn and Republican leaders intend to see that it gets done with a minimum of drama, but maybe with a bit more robust debate.

So now anytime the House of Representatives wants to use its power of the purse, it will be called a "government shutdown." And every member of the Establishment Oligarchy will go along with that view.
Cornyn now has 6 years to follow the beat of his own drummer.
All against our interests too. A traitor with a capital T.
"In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit."
See new tagline.
Federal Civil Service wage and hiring freezes would be better. Hire only those replacing retiring workers or those leaving the government, keep budgets at the same level for the next five years, and NO BONUSES.............................
“For starters, the memory of the 2013 shutdown over Obamacare instigated by his fellow Texas senator, Ted Cruz, remains fresh. “
Yes, it was so horrible John your party took over the senate and increased it’s majority in the house a year later.
Swanky new office and a powerful committee post perhaps?
MONEY bucket loads of it.
Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.[Posted on 11/19/2013 12:16:51 PM by Third Person]

“I got mine, screw yours.”
Not a good idea. As republican (small r) Conservatives we want small and limited government performing inherently governmental tasks efficiently at a level as close to the public as possible.
That means a well qualified, well motivated and professional workforce. Your prescription would drive the good people (there are some. A few are actually Freepers) out of government leaving the bad ones to do whatever they want.
Better idea would be to put teeth into civil service reform. Fire the bottom 10% of performers and redistribute their salaries as raises and bonuses to those who keep their jobs. The next year fire the new bottom 10% and redistribute their salaries. Repeat the cycle a few more times times ...
He learned the wrong lesson.
Cornyn was on FOX the Sunday before they were sworn into the Majority calling for Higher Gas Taxes and was backed up by John Thune.
We have met the enemy, and he is us
Cornyn is a perfect RINO. coming from Texas, one thinks he is conservative but he is DC scum.
The advent of Cruz as being a true conservative from Texas encapsulates the deception propagated by Cornyn.
The Tea Party is in full force now and after his seat to make it a hat trick in the Senate for Texas.
Firing a government civil service person is next to impossible without some really good reason like murder. And then they want to know if it was a Republican or Democrat that you murdered..................
He can be the first to stay home.
I was surprised “Cornhole” slipped by us in the primaries. His name recognition was too strong and his voting record too wishy washy to nail him as a full-fledged RINO. His opponent, Steve Stockman, wasn’t as well known except within the Tea Party and the hard-right conservatives. Stockman did well, but not enough to prevent Cornyn from getting over 50% of the vote. There was some cross-over votes by the Democrats that helped too.
Still, I hope Cornyn will get on the conservative band wagon and join us over the next six years. He can be influenced. He will be voting whichever way is best for his political career and interests. He is a Washington GOPe politician full-time, and a Texas conservative part-time.
That’s the way Texas politics go. He looks like a Texas conservative but he ain’t. He’s no Ted Cruz.
