Nearly $1 in $3 in state revenue comes from the federal government, according to a new analysis.
While taxes are responsible for most state general revenues, the federal government is responsible for about 31.5 percent of the total, according to the nonprofit Tax Foundation.

Texas, Florida, Arizona and NM do pretty well, considering they are forced by the Supreme Court ruling of the ‘80s to support all the undesirables from Mexico. It’s the least the federal government can do since they don’t have the expense of patrolling the border or deporting illegals.
I live in Alaska and when you figure we have about 650,000 people that is a terrible figure of 24 percent. We have oil money and the state is 30 billion in debt. Where does all this money go? Not to mention military spending. The roads are pathetic, the salaries aren’t bad and unemployment isn’t too bad. Schools and government handouts such as health care for that many people just doesn’t cover the amount being spent. No accountability means we will never know where all that money has gone.
i don’t think these percentages mean anything. If the state budget is bloated then the amount the feds provider for it will be smaller. If the state trims there expenses then the federal portion would look higher. compare texas and california
It's a sweet racket they have going on.
No fair reading the details!
/s
All states combined $2,855.1 $312.0 $2,462.2
California $334.4 $35.6 $291.1
Texas $249.9 $33.9 $195.5
New York $231.9 $25.4 $201.7
Florida $141.2 $8.2 $129.9
Illinois $137.1 $16.2 $117.3
New Jersey $128.1 $19.1 $105.7
Ohio $124.7 $12.1 $108.5
Pennsylvania $120.4 $11.9 $105.3
“I suspect must of this can be correlated with blacks and illegals as a portion of population...”
How would you then explain California at number 40?
Without knowing the details and breakdowns of federal involvement and presence in each state, this doesn’t tell us what we really want to know.
Please keep the following in mind when reading this post. Low-information state lawmakers long ago unsurprisingly overlooked the federal governments constitutionally limited power to tax and spend as evidenced not only by the ill-conceived 17th Amendment (17A), but also by the following excerpt from a Supreme Court case opinion.
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
In other words, the feds are prohibited from laying taxes for spending that cannot be justified under Congresss constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.
So a bunch of taxpayer dollars which corrupt Congress has never had the constitutional authority to appropriate in the first place are being thrown at the states, the main purpose of such funding likely to win votes for corrupt, Constitution-ignoring federal lawmakers.
Note that Founding States had originally given state lawmakers unique control of the federal Senate. This is because one purpose of the Senate was undoubtedly to kill House appropriations bills which not only stole 10th Amendment-protected state powers, but also arguably robbed state revenues associated with those powers as evidenced by the clarification above of Congress's limited power to lay taxes.
Again, 17A is glaring evidence that voters and state lawmakers had long ago forgotten about the federal governments constitutionally limited powers, especially Congresss limited power to lay taxes.
TX would use MUCH less by just deporting the illegals.
A lot of that money going into Arizona goes to the Indian tribes, National Parks and National Forests. Without that millions pouring into the “sovereign” reservations, a lot of the tribes would cease to exist. That map is a little misleading.
The states that get the most Federal revenue tend to be those that have large military bases and Indian reservations. If Social Security and Medicare outlays are included in the calculation, then add states with a lot of retirees, too.
Whats up with red states sucking up so much revenue?
...
Red states have lower state taxes, so the Fed contribution is a higher percentage.
Va is 47th awesome !
That’s what I was thinking. The state gets $1 out of $3. Where does the $3 come from and where does the other $2 go?
The red states are where the vast majority of minorities live.
“Va is 47th awesome !”
Of course, salaries for federal employees and money for federal contracts is not included.
A little off subject, maybe.
We watch a lot of the Alaska ‘reality’ shows.
How do the indigenous Alaskans living in those tiny outposts afford 4 wheelers and snow machines.
They cost many thousands of dollars.
