A record 92,898,000 Americans 16 years and older did not participate in the labor force last month, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The BLS defines people not in the work force as people 16 years and up who are not employed and havent made specific efforts to find employment sometime during the 4-week period ending with the reference week. The labor force participation rate or the The labor force as a percent of the civilian noninstitutional population also dipped back down to 62.7 percent, from 62.9 percent in November.

Thank heavens that so many people have given up looking for work in bh0’s economy, otherwise he would not be able to boast how his economic policies are causing a decrease in the government unemployment statistics.
(sarcasm)
Outside of a few specialized trades and locations, this economy is the worst Weve ever seen for jobs. Awful! Just awful. And it doesn’t help how well- qualified or how good a worker you are.
With the Obamacare mandate kicking in, lots of dumbass blue states hiking the minimum wage and post-Christmas layoffs (Macy’s & JCPenney have already started), that number will soon hit 100 million and keep on truckin’.
And the unemployment rate will continue to decline. When does the Mad Hatter invite us to tea?
I wouldn’t be surprised if a good chunk were the younger group. Plenty of people with degrees work low-wage retail right now, or are underemployed.
Does this include all of the welfare recipients, such as the girls who are having out-of-wedlock children for income?
It’s really bad when you want to talk about decent-paying jobs. Employment doesn’t tell you how many people work a job that hardly pays enough to handle life’s challenges.
The headline and statement are misleading. It should say “Record 92,898,000 able bodied adult Americans Not In The Workforce”. Little doubt it was written by some lib in expectation that their Low Info voters will conclude it includes children and retired.
About 1 in 4 Adults aged 25-54 are not working.

Population of the US is listed as 317 million. I have been attempting to break down that number by age - students, retirees, illegals, retirees, FED & State employees, welfare recipients etc.,
Would be interesting to see how many working taxpayers are supporting the govt. employees and welfare recipients (elected officials;)).
It also includes people like my wife, a stay-at-home mom to our two young boys --a job that's a helluva lot harder than mine!
I've had a lot of plumbing work done recently, my plumber owns his business. We have an arrangement, I pay him in cash, he gives me a nice discount.
I win, the plumber wins, everybody wins, except "the beast". I love starving the beast in any little way that I can.
I urge everybody, who is having any kind of work done to talk to your contractor, it doesn't hurt to ask and you might actually save some money.
yes, there are so many highly-qualified people doing $10/hour jobs (such as store clerking)...these days, because there just aren’t regular jobs (using their training and talents) in this Great Obama Recession.
Any employer with need of regular, higher-paid employees is converting its positions to part-time (to avoid the ObamaCare taxes) or contacting the work out on a piece-work, cash-only basis. Often to overseas...
We have at least two more years of this misery...any recovery will depend on getting a less anti-jobs, pro-American administration in the 2016 election.
thanks!! It says that represents about 28.9 million people not working which is stunning.
That number alone would put unemployment at 25%.
I also see that the number of unemployed between 18 and 25 is higher than those older than 25. This would put the overall unemployment at over 25%.
I think when we hear that unemployment is at a 14yr low at near 5.5%, we are being Grubered.
I’ve seen a number of hiring ads in stores, lately. The majority of these stores’ workers are part time, though.
:-)
Still, looking on the bright side, we have the lowest unemployment numbers since GW Bush.
If they took another 20 million out of the work force we'll probably be at full employment.
bttt
About 100 Million working age adults are not employed.
