KING, N.C. Effective immediately, all religious symbols at the veterans memorial in King have been removed as part of a settlement with Steven Hewett, a man who sued the city claiming his constitutional rights were being violated because of a Christian flag flown at the memorial and the inclusion of a cross as part of a statue honoring veterans.
The decision was made at Tuesday nights city council meeting. The city council also repealed a 2010 law establishing a flag lottery that allowed flags of any religious denomination to be flown at the memorial.

Steven Hewett's rights end where others rights begin.
Atheists rule.
Sorry, I should have asked a better question: Would this atheist have said anything if it were a crescent?
ONE limp wristed guy in Canada complained, and now the song “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits is censored.
How does one person dictate to many?
Because our leadership is more concerned with NOT offending ONE person, wrings their hands over it, so they in turn offend many to appease ONE thin skinned whiner.
Where in the Constitution is his right not to be offended?
We’ve come to expect that from our socialist neighbor. Americans are still angry and muttering.
Yes.
But even here in the States, the song is censored so as not to “offend.”
I’m not religious but I just don’t see where this can be construed as the state sponsoring or supporting any specific religion or sect. Will we have to fight a war to protect peoples religious rights in this country? No one is forcing these people to believe anything. I just don’t get it. Push comes to shove and I’ll side with the Christians.
My Grandfather has a commemorative brick in that memorial. How infuriating. Is Steven Hewett even a vet? That’s a very deeply religious area of NC. A very small town just South of Pilot Mountain. What you Andy Griffith fans know a “Mt Pilot”. Very surprising and disappointing that this was allowed to happen there.
What about everyone else’s rights?
According to court papers, the City of Kings insurance company will pay $500,001 to Americans United for Separation of Church and State for fees and costs incurred by Hewett.
Right next to “Separation of Church and State”...
Steven Hewett needs to get the answer he deserves.
If you get my drift.
Set the statue on him.
Or bolt it to his porch blocking his door.
That city council should be recalled and punished for this and be an example of what will happen if any other city council, school board, etc goes against what the MAJORITY WANT.
I always sing the unedited lyrics.
At the top of my lungs.
With the windows open.
I’ve been looking for the unedited CD.
I also sing the unedited lyrics.
What thin skinned wimps the population appears to have become.
It isn’t what the city council wanted but they were in danger of losing their town’s insurance. They’re a small town.
“Where in the Constitution is his right not to be offended?”
That was the first thing I thought of. Where does it read in the Constitution you have a right to not be offended by anything?
