A young mother and cartoonist who survived the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris today said she had let the suspected Al Qaeda killers into the magazine office.
Corrine Rey said she had returned from picking up her young daughter from a kindergarten when she was confronted by two heavily armed men wearing balaclavas.
'I had gone to pick up my daughter at day care, arriving in front of the magazine building, where two masked and armed men brutally threatened us,' said Ms Rey, who draws under the name 'Coco'.
'They said they wanted to go up to the offices, so I tapped in the code,' said Ms Rey, referring to the digi-code security system on the inter-phone.
Miss Rey and her daughter hid under a desk, from where they saw two other cartoonists being executed.
'They shot Wolinski and Cabu,' she said, 'It lasted five minutes. I had taken refuge under a desk.
She said the men 'spoke French perfectly' and 'claimed they were 'Al Qaeda terrorists'.

Media is saying authorities and cartoonists knew this office was a terrorist target- so why did she have her child there? I won’t judge her because I don’t have enough information but seems people just don’t take terrorist threats seriously. We wouldn’t want to seem like we are not PC.
It sounds like she was the greeter for the entire building, maybe doubling as a cartoonist for Hebdo.
From the fact she brought her child, it sounds like she didn’t even rise to the level of rent-a-cop.
Hebdo management really goofed up to be in a building like that. Better a private facility where they could supply whatever guard they desired.
Maybe they were among the slain.

Men are supposed to provide for women’s security. I am not a feminist. You may not agree with me, which is fine, but men are to protect their women and children. Women are to care for their men and children, but protect their children in the absence of their men.
If my children and I were in danger, don’t you think I should be able to count on my husband to protect us as best he can?

She wasn’t a door guard, she was an employee returning to work. From what I’ve read the door had no human guard, just the codelock.

Once they pointed their guns in the direction of her daughter's head, it appears that she took the threat very seriously.
That being said, everyone in that building should have had a gun in their desk. But Europe is largely unarmed. These people were victims of political correctness.
I’d sure not want my wife to be left in a vulnerable spot like this and if Charlie Hebdo asked her to, I would be hollering at Charlie Hebdo to find a better plan. This isn’t like some boring architect office. It had known enemies.
No...they shot the outdoor security.
They had known enemies, that would make sense, maybe even a closet where they could get to better armaments in a hurry. But that would not fly in Paris.

Well see that’s my issue as well....they had no planning in how to protect their employees...the outside security was shot but they should have had them inside at the desk.
What they really should have done is made it clear to all employees that their agenda of printing artoons and digging at the muslim community would surely put them at risk for attach....upon hire....then it’s every man for himslef.

This is where a “panic code” would make sense. Something that would silently warn the people ahead that an assault was coming, in a hostage situation.
Gone are those days. My husband, son, and son-in-law would NEVER allow us to go to such a workplace. They had received threats. They were sitting ducks if all that separated them from terrorists was one entry button. On the other hand, we women prefer to be at home taking care of our families, so it’s a moot point.
Yes, really. Flight 93 and the passengers who fought back are the brightest spot on a black day. But that doesn’t mean that they sprang into action a “split second” after the plane was taken. That’s my quibble with the other poster. Beamer was on the phone for approximately 15 minutes with Verizon representative Lisa Jefferson before the passengers launched their attack on the hijackers.
It does seem as if they must have known about the editorial meeting. They also had a sort of priority list of names, and asked people to identify themselves and then shot them. So they must have been expecting to find all those people there.
Sorry, but the very use of that phrase puts the lie to what follows.
