KC auto shop worker survives three-mile I-70 ride atop SUV

A Kansas City auto repair shop employee made a snap decision Monday when a woman drove off without paying for repairs.

He jumped on the roof of her Cadillac Escalade and held on during a high-speed, three-mile ride that ended outside Kansas City police headquarters.

Another auto shop employee followed in another vehicle and told police that he tried to stop the Cadillac by firing shots at its tires. One of the bullets hit the driver’s side door.

Police said it was a miracle that no one was injured in the incident that began shortly before 3 p.m. Monday at 24th Street and Indiana Avenue.

According to police reports, a woman who had left her vehicle at the shop for repairs was told she needed to pay $3,000 and would owe an additional $700 storage fee if she left it there.

Good times eh?

Indeed. Loved telling girls I owned a 'vette. Only to mention later that it was a "Che"-vette.

I’ve only owned one car that didn’t have windshield wipers, and it was the same one that didn’t have brakes for a long time, so stopping had to be well anticipated and traffic lights timed, using your left foot and having a passenger that would jump out and help stop the car, helped.

Is that what you meant?

The first time that I truly drove a car on my own was when I was 12 and visited my father, he owned a giant Cadillac and one day he tossed me the keys and got into the back seat, and had me chauffeur him around Houston the entire day as he did his business, mostly downtown, I drove a 100 city miles that day, wondering what the heck was going on, and he never said a word to me about it, or explained why he did it.

lol...I've never had to get that crazy without brakes except for maybe a time or two in the driveway. My issues are usually press the brake pedal to the floor, shift down to each lower gear, then slam it into park if necessary to come to a complete stop.

Laws now restrict anybody under 18 from having more than one non-family passenger. I remember in HS piling about 6 friends into a station wagon to go to an away football game.

I have a story about that also, it made the news.

It’s all black ‘03, with dark (factory) tint; more of a NSA/CIA look.

I bought it for her as a birthday present in ‘05. Buying two years old cut the price in half.

Anything to make my girl smile!

The cops didn’t know what to write.

I got away with one of those. It turns out in Wisconsin, to be convicted of Reckless Driving you have to be within 75' of a roadway. Since I was 375' up (paved) Jackson Creek the citation didn't apply. There were a withering array of charges that would have applied, yet not the one with which I was charged.

For me they settled on illegal riding after calling headquarters, which someone explained meant something like being a passenger on a motorcycle without a foot rest, or something, it was a $15.00 dollar fine.
