New D.C. Mayor: We 'Deserve Full Democracy and Statehood'
The issue of statehood for the nation's capital re-entered the public debate Sunday morning, with the mayor of Washington, D.C. declaring the need for a "new path" for the district. "The residents of Washington, D.C. deserve full democracy and statehood," newly elected Mayor Muriel Bowser said in an appearance on Meet the Press.
When pressed by host Chuck Todd on whether she would accept being part of Maryland, Bowser was firm, "We are Washington, D.C., Chuck, and the residents of the District of Columbia really want to forge a new path towards statehood." She said, "We can start with budget autonomy, unhooking our government from the federal government."
She also indicated statehood would remove any talk of the district filing a lawsuit against Congress for blocking voter approved legislation to allow for recreational use of marijuana. The mayor did not expressly say what direction Washington, D.C. would take in the matter. Congress upheld the decriminalization of marijuana under Issue 71 passed in November, but did not uphold the recreational use portion of the issue.

Yeah, like that is going to happen.
This is a total conspiracy by the Flag Makers Union of America.

A “state” that steals money from the citizens of the other 50 and produces nothing itself? That’s all we need.
Allow D.C. in as a state provided that everything north of Albany becomes the state of North York.
More leftist insanity. I think they must have a war room setup in the WH that’s operated by Jarrett which poses the same question daily - “What can we do to piss off the American people today”?
Look to some South American socialist hellhole for your “democracy”. This is a Republic. For a little while longer, at least.
It’s absolutely necessary that the Federal government be located outside of the territory of any of its member states:
1) The offices and officials of the FedGov must have complete autonomy and be be completely free from the laws, regulations and controls of any member state;
2) For the FedGov to have its own “state” with voting rights in either the House or in the Senate would be a conflict of interest.
You’ll get nothing and like it.
I’m all for full statehood—make them an independent nation—that will give them budgetary autonomy. Let them take all the present congress critters with them. We’d loose a few good ones, but I think it would be a net benefit.
Roll them into Maryland. Problem solved.
They are NOT a STATE. THEY ARE A FEDERAL DISTRICT.
You don’t like that, don’t live in it. The Founders didn’t want the federal capitol in any one state. They also didn’t want it to be a state, because then the Capitol would be in a state. They didn’t want favoritism and they didn’t want the Capitol to have any one predominant Christian denomination in it, as most states were set up at the time. Further Jefferson as a governor would issue a Day of Prayer because at the state level he saw nothing prohibiting this, but as President and as to not show any one denomination favor over another, he didn’t. To make DC a state would blur this line.
Wasn’t 10 square miles supposed to be the seat of the Federal Gov’t? Declare eminent domain & knock down everything that isn’t related to the Feds. Move the DC residents to another state. Problem solved.
I wish these people would read their history as to why DC is what it is & why it ISN’T a state.
Statehood denied. Next question!
Technically, they are part of Maryland. If Virginia would just give back the portion of DC that was returned back to Virginia, VA would probably turn red.
"Count Every (Fraudulent) Vote"!!!!
Nope. Bad idea.
Wouldn’t we need to amend the Constitution in order to make this happen?
Very interesting premise.
I wonder how that looks on the cost/benefit tradeoff for VA as far as taxes paid, etc?
