Hundreds of people showed up at a pro-police rally on the Cape this weekend. Organizers said there was so much interest, they had to move the rally to a larger venue.
"I've never seen anything go viral on Facebook like this has gone viral on Facebook," organizer Patrick Foran said.
About 500 people came out to the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School football field to show their support for the men and women in blue.
Foran says he helped put the event together because he has friends who are police officers.
"We're just looking to say thank you to all the officers," Foran said.
Many of the people in the crowd said that these kinds of events are badly needed all over the country right now, adding they hope it helps lift police officers' spirits.
"Police have been unsupported by the highest levels of government and from certain segments of the population who feel we have no accountability," Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson said.
Frederickson says he wants the people who question what police do to put themselves in an officer's shoes.
"Being a police chief, all I can tell you is that our officers do our best day in and out. Answer the calls of all types from minor calls to serious calls, and they put themselves in danger. Make split second decisions, and almost always do it right," Frederickson added.
Organizers of this event said there has been some discussion about organizing more pro-police rallies in other corners of Massachusetts.
Also, there is a new movement on social media that calls on people to switch out their porch lights to blue or put a blue candle or light in their window to show support for police.
500 people at a Rally for anything on Cape Cod in January is pretty much unheard of.
Hoo-ray for our side, the side of the law abiding citizens.
I am putting in my blue bulb today.
That's a great idea, and something just about all of us can do. It's a great way for the silent majority to be heard.
This needs to go national...
>>What’s up with the “blue bulb”? Is that something well known that I’ve missed? I know guys used to put them on their motorcycles, but am pretty sure that wasn’t in support of LEO’s. <<
It is a new thing — it is starting to become viral: put blue bulbs in your porch light to show support for LEOs.
Not many black lights on the Cape.
Or RED!
