As many as seven people were shot overnight at a New Year's Eve party in the southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Killarney, including two people in critical condition, police say.
Det. Steve Adair said city police received multiple 911 calls from the 1900 block of 36th Street S.W. at about 5:05 a.m. MT Thursday.
The number of people shot is unclear, but it's believed to be between five and seven. Responding officers located five people in and around the house with possible gunshot wounds and Adair said two other people later showed up at local hospitals for treatment.
Those injured in the shootings are believed to be in their 20s.

There has been for a few years, a low level street gang war between the 'Fresh Off the Boat' gang (FOB) and the 'FOB Killers' gang. Both were originally Canadian-born Vietnamese gangs, but no longer. Both are multi-ethnic. A New Years Day 2009 triple murder in a restaurant was gang related, though one victim was an innocent by-stander. Too early to say if this is related.
(sarc) Happy New Year from Little Chicago Calgary! After 5 were killed in Calgary in a mass murder in May, Edmonton finally came through this week with eight, moving the bar higher for 2014. It looks like Calgary is trying to set a high standard in 2015, with this shooting! Welcome to Chicago North! </sarc>
Now, Global News is stating that one of the critically injured has died. http://globalnews.ca/news/1751237/7-shot-2-seriously-injured-at-calgary-house-party/
This can’t be true!
Canada has banned guns exactly so this won’t happen, so it didn’t.
you beat me to it.
Our strength is in our violent diversity!
Are they sure it was not a Kwanzaa Party or something?
That must have been some party!
The last thing I remember about Calgary is that the folks loved a good rodeo. The Calgary Stampede was right up there with our big Northwest rodeos. But I guess these Veetnemese Cowboys can’t actually ride a horse? Maybe the Stampede went out of business-—it’s been awhile since I’ve heard about it happening. Is there any chance we can put all these dummies back in the same room and let them finish the discussion that started the donneybrook? They don’t want to talk-—let them shoot it out.
That should be the legal sentence. Take a chunk of blasted desert in AZ (my state) or NV. and wall it off. Sentence for Gang crime? Life.
It will be a short sentence. Especially from June through October.
In fact, do gang raids, air drop them and be done with it.
I think you forgot the “/sarc” tag.
Actually, guns are not banned in Canada. Certain types, such as handguns and semi-auto and automatic weapons are restricted.
In general, long guns are not banned, but there is a process involving taking a course, passing an exam, and police background checks before obtaining a license to own a firearm. The purchase of ammo requires the buyer to produce his/her license. There is no longer a long gun registry in Canada, but Quebec, the socialist utopia paid for by other Canadians’ tax money, is fighting to keep a form of a registry.
As far as a license to own a ‘restricted’ firearm, the passing of a further exam is required and an ‘Authorization to Transport’ (ATT) is required. This allows an individual to then use his/her handgun at a range.
As far as ‘carrying’ a firearm on your person, that is restricted to police on duty, and certain security and military personnel while on duty. If you do choose to ‘carry’ in Canada, be it concealed or not, go ahead and do it, but only if you have five years to spend at the leisure of Her Majesty in ‘luxurious’ accommodations such as Millhaven Institution, Dorchester Pen, Edmonton Institution, Drumheller Institution or several other prime pieces of Canadian real estate.
AZ? Well now that you mention it there is the Goldwater Bombing Range. Great place for a shootout. BTW I notice the bombing range, which is right on the Mexican border, doesn’t seem to have a wetback problem?
I was thinking more in the ‘Southeast of Parker’ or “East of Bullhead city” areas. Where the average surface temp of pavement gets well north of the temp needed to melt boot soles, and does... and you literally blister skin if you lean a hand/arm on a car trunk too long. And water doesn’t exist east of the River.
We have hungry buzzards to feed.
Guns aren’t banned, I own plenty. I’m Albertan.
Did it cause a stampede? /GallowsHumor
While the FOB and FOBK are likely interested in 'horse', it is definitely a different type of 'horse' than is found performing at the grandstand during Stampede!
As 'gangs' that sells drugs, are involved in prostitution, money laundering, human trafficking, etc., they are legally 'criminal organisations' under Canadian law. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, membership in such an organisation is a criminal offense. Unfortunately, proving this is difficult. When it is proven, they should be sentenced to the fullest extent of the law.
I have a different view than those at Corrections Canada and you. Since PM Harper spoke of building a high Arctic naval base and a series Northern Operations Hubs in the high Arctic, to stockpile CF hardware, for defense against Russia (and perhaps Denmark) attempting to take over resources claimed by Canada in the high Arctic. Anyone convicted of being a member of a 'criminal organisations' should be sentenced to construction of such bases in the high Arctic, Canada's Gulag, if you will.
It did end with a bang!
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
A few years back I was detained at the border crossing where I-29 ends in North Dakota (can't recall the name of the town). The Canadian border guards weren't abusive or anything but they basically took the trunk of my car apart, searched the contents of my laptop and asked dozens of questions about firearms.I have a spotless criminal record and haven't owned a firearm in about 40 years.I *do* have a common name and I suppose it's possible that some other US citizen with my name was on some sort watch list...that's the only thing I can think of.
After 90 minutes they let me proceed...after several dozen questions about firearms.
Just sayin....
Police say witnesses have identified themselves and others at the party as members of African communities. Adair said police "are not getting a great deal of co-operation" from witnesses.
Really?
Diversity is our strength. It also enables death on New Year’s Eve in western Canada.
