If you watch the video you will see that this was NOT an instance of 'the knockout game'. Mr. King was approached from behind and put into a rear naked choke hold, hauled down and then beaten.

I’m pretty amazed, too. The Bronx has a lot of decent neighborhoods, mostly Irish, Jewish and Hispanic, although there are a few bad pockets.

But you’re usually pretty safe there, and I think he was exactly right: it was a racial attack. The guys just wanted to slug him, maybe not go all the way to killing him, but just punish him for being a vulnerable older white man and then get on with their day.

When I go someplace where I know I’ll be surrounded but cannot be armed (i.e., the V.A. hospital) I carry a five foot long quarterstaff as a “cane” with me. Many a yeoman or peasant has fought off a knight armed with a sword with only a quarterstaff.
