When the movement is now measured in miles instead of yards, things have definitely changed. The German offensive took them out from behind their defensive positions and interior lines, and now there is a fluidity to things compared to the Roer battles from September on. In a way, Patton's remark about the kraut sticking his head (I was told that he referred to a different part of the anatomy) into a meat grinder turned out to be correct... but the price paid was high and the US leadership spent much of the balance of their lives either taking credit for what they didn't do or blaming someone else for what they did do.

My Dad told me after they read that it was basically “no prisoners” time during battle and afterward they only accepted prisoners if they had their own food.
