A sea of blue flooded the streets around a Queens church Saturday morning -- thousands of police waiting to pay respects for one of two New York officers who lost their lives in the line of duty last weekend.
More than 25,000 police officers attended Christ Tabernacle church in the Glendale neighborhood for the funeral of Rafael Ramos, the New York City police officer murdered one week ago.
Vice President Joe Biden, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio are among those in attendance.
During the service, Bratton announced he was appointing Ramos to an honorary NYPD chaplain. Also, he posthumously promoted Ramos and his slain partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, to detectives first grade....

Yes, and one of the provisions appears to be awarding promotions posthumously when a policeman dies in the line of service.
That is absurd, and done at the expense of taxpayers.
The example I gave was one of being a private employer.

If you want to give away your money, please do, but when the government unionizes against us, and steals our money, and is looting our cities, that is an entirely different story.
This is a stupid practice of making cops a different rank if they die on duty, it is just silly, but if they are doing it to increase the already overly generous benefits, then taxpayers should put a stop to that practice immediately.

And there is a collection for their families in the millions. This is wrong. Cops already get so many benefits, they don’t need another paid for by the taxpayers that aren’t earned
If you ever get on S.S., when you die and have already received the check for the month you die, survivor has to pay it back to S.S.

I agree with poster. You can have a set policy that says if this happen x happens. But to do it adhoc is basically making the politician look good at the expense of taxpayer.
And cops gets paid higher with benefits already for the threats they endure!
I very seldom feel strongly enough about a post to overtly (but respectfully) disagree with anyone on FR, but please work the streets for 25 years (or even a couple of weeks) before bemoaning an officer's earned retirement or posthumous promotion. Your choice of professions dictates your benefits.
Perhaps we should have areas designated as “law enforcement free zones” where you would not have to “pay for cops”, then you're on your own. I doubt working at your desk puts you and your family at great risk for you being killed on any given day that you leave for work. That is, of course, with the exception of a 9-11 attack, and the sporadic, horrible workplace shootings that occur from time to time. I've been to too many LE funerals and lost too many caring, outstanding officers and friends. Schedule a ride-along with your local PD and think about the recent incidents when you roll up in response to a seemingly-routine call. And this doesn't even include the Ferguson-type situations that can ruin an officer's life in a few seconds while he or she is trying to stay alive and/or protect others.

If it is in their contract, then so be it; if not, it is improper. NJ benefits from people fleeing the high costs of NYC; they can give the families a billion each.
The Jersey City cop I mentioned earlier in the thread was a young guy with no wife/kids; what was the purpose of that?
I understand law enforcement; as I posted, I have family in law enforcement. Living along the frontier of the Newark Welfare Reservation, I get it.
Guy died in the line of duty days before he was due for a promotion, and you would begrudge his family this token of respect?

I'd much rather help support these police officers' families than pay to support the bums, the thugs and all the other parasites that these officers died to protect me from.
But support those parasites I do, thanks to the antisocial "social programs" the city funds. I hope every dollar that accrues to those pensions comes out of some bogus pro-crime scam.

As I pointed out to another poster posthumous promotions with associated benefit increases are standard practice in the NYPD for police killed in the line of duty.
