A sea of blue flooded the streets around a Queens church Saturday morning -- thousands of police waiting to pay respects for one of two New York officers who lost their lives in the line of duty last weekend.
More than 25,000 police officers attended Christ Tabernacle church in the Glendale neighborhood for the funeral of Rafael Ramos, the New York City police officer murdered one week ago.
Vice President Joe Biden, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio are among those in attendance.
During the service, Bratton announced he was appointing Ramos to an honorary NYPD chaplain. Also, he posthumously promoted Ramos and his slain partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, to detectives first grade....

They did the same thing for the Jersey City cop killed in the Walgreen’s ambush.
I’m not a fan of the practice, and surprised it is even legal.
Probably increases the widows pension in some way. I didnt even know they were detectives, as the press refers to them as police officer so-and-so.
“Honorary”. Of course its legal,,
It is widely done, one rank up, upon on duty death or retirement. There isn’t the slightest thing wrong with it and it does not involve pay or benefits.
It was mentioned on the radio as being specifically for that purpose; they weren’t detectives (and the Jersey City cop wasn’t either), and were promoted posthumously specifically to provide more benefits.
It sounds nince, but I’m looking at it as the person paying the bill. I don’t doubt that police officers, with a strong union and great benefits, already have generous benefits provided if they die in the line of duty.
The atheist, leftist de Blasio eulogized Ramos as a man of faith, quoted the Bible, praised the NYPD and not once during his speech did he refer to the cops as pigs.
1010 WINS news this morning specifically stated it WAS for additional benefits; it is the primary radio news station for NYC.
Detective First Grade is much higher than patrolman.
In other good news, a charity is paying their mortgages.
One of these guys just joined the force in the last few years; I don’t know the specifics of what the ranks signify.
There are three ranks of detective above regular police officer and below police sergeant in the NYPD. Detective First Class is the highest of the three, so they received three promotions upward.
Indefensible; glad I don’t pay taxes there.
He appears to be a sound young man who could go far with his life.
I’m going to go out on a limb in thinking that the Deblasio aide dating a killer who called cops “pigs” both had a prior engagements and were unable to pay their ... respects.
It’s an upside down world where thugs get hugs while police are cursed.
Oh yeah—it’s Obama’s Amerika.
The two officers and their family paid a higher price.
No doubt; they had arrangements in their contracts for that. I live in a neighboring state with a huge number of cops who are paid more than $100K annually; a friend retired after working 25 years - at 46 years old.
I pay for cops, and I won’t get a posthumous raise to increase the death benefit to my family if I die at my desk.
I find your post stunning.
That's between you and your employer.
If I was a employer and if my employee was assassinated for doing their job, I would certainly consider a promotion and all the benefits it might bring, posthumously.
See # 16; they argue the dangers are the reason for the high pay. I sympathize with the families; there are provisions for this already.
I find your acceptance of this stunning.
That is absurd, and done at the expense of taxpayers.
