ehicles, as did concern about global warming. But now gasoline prices have plunged to their lowest level since the Great Recession, averaging $2.50 nationwide for a gallon of regular. If gas prices stay low granted, a very big if one of the most powerful arguments for alternative fuel cars will be wiped out.
You have an early-adopter group thats much more interested in these vehicles as a way of doing something 'green, and the cost of fuel is not going to be a big factor for them, said John ODell, a senior editor at the Edmunds.com auto information website. Once you get out of the early-adopter group and into the mainstream, then gasoline prices matter a lot.

My sister sent me a pic from the pump at their local KY station on the 23rd and it’s $1.539 there...
Is the Kenyan still trying to take credit for these falling gas prices? First he nailed Osama and now this! Whadda guy!!!
The cheapest we have found in our area of SoCal is $2.59, but it will be going up. Our governor Moonbeam made sure of that with our new gas tax starting at the beginning of the year.
Say hello to the new cap and trade gas tax Californians.
Amen to that! I would love it if we were less dependent on oil. It would devastate some of our biggest foreign rivals like Iran and Russia and we wouldn't have to be so involved in the Middle East in the future.
“Until, they can get charging time down they are not viable, merely, feasible. The idea of changeable battery packs would require service station acres of storage space and enormous amounts of current.” —depressed in 06
“But to someone less well-heeled who is looking for cost effective transportation they have a long, long way to go.” —Iron Munro
Yea, the battery-swap idea seems like it would be really expensive to maintain. However, we can get 90% of the way there with a much cheaper solution: the Chevy Volt. Now I know it has gotten a lot of bad press but hear me out. After rebates (I know a lot of people don't like them, but they are a current reality nonetheless), here in Texas you can get a new Volt for $25,000. It allows you to go the first 40 miles every day on electricity and it also has a gasoline engine and a 340 mile gas tank if you need to go farther. Since 78% of Americans drive less than 40 miles round-trip on their daily commute,[1] most people will only use gas when they go visit grandma. Also, all the concerns about battery fires turned out to be baloney; after four years on the market, there have been a grand total of zero fires started by a Volt in the real world.
Thank God electricity is magic and doesn’t require fossil fuels or electric cars would be a bad joke.
I have no problem with electric cars. People should be free to choose any option they want. I do care that electric cars are thought of as “more environmentally conscious” because they don’t use gasoline when the electricity that powers these cars comes (mostly) from burning coal or natural gas!
Ok I admit, I thought the lower gas price was just another election season gimmick...I was sure we’d be up to $4.00/gallon by now.

Natural gas is actually really clean compared to coal, and coal only makes up 39%. This means that around 60% comes from pretty clean sources.
From http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=427&t=3
In 2013, energy sources and percent share of total electricity generation were
Coal 39%
Natural Gas 27%
Nuclear 19%
Hydropower 7%
Other Renewable 6% (Wind 4.13%, Biomass 1.48%, Geothermal 0.41%, Solar 0.23%)
Petroleum 1%
Other Gases < 1%
Combustion of natural gas still produces carbon dioxide. The global warming hoaxers don’t like carbon dioxide.
FallIng crude oil prices are the enviro-nazis worst nightmare.
It does, but its still produces a good bit less than gasoline. Here you can do a electricity vs gasoline comparison based on your zip code or look at the national average.
Regardless, I think EVs are great for the geopolitical benefits, the potential for cleaner air in big cities, and the cheap recharge costs.
The cheap recharge costs is because you circumvent the gas tax. That won’t last.
In places where you can get time-of-use electricity (nighttime discount), it is even cheaper. I have found that almost everyone I talk to has time-of-use electricity available in their area.
I guess I, and about half my coworkers, are in the 22%.
