ehicles, as did concern about global warming. But now gasoline prices have plunged to their lowest level since the Great Recession, averaging $2.50 nationwide for a gallon of regular. If gas prices stay low — granted, a very big “if” — one of the most powerful arguments for alternative fuel cars will be wiped out.

“You have an early-adopter group that’s much more interested in these vehicles as a way of doing something 'green,’ and the cost of fuel is not going to be a big factor for them,” said John O’Dell, a senior editor at the Edmunds.com auto information website. “Once you get out of the early-adopter group and into the mainstream, then gasoline prices matter a lot.”

If gas prices drop to $2.00 a gallon, there goes the “cash for clunkers” program.

Any energy source that requires a subsidy is, by definition, “unsustainable.”

The American dream of running commercial trucks and buses on natural gas, and exporting liquefied NG, also took a huge hit yesterday:

NG briefly touched $3.00 and closed at $3.03.

A big part of our future natural gas “surplus” depends on capturing and transporting gas from wells that would make no economic sense at that price.

The sustained high gas prices of the Obama years have doubtless encouraged advances and growth in alternative fuels. Tesla has proven that electric cars are viable, and not just some rich Birkenstock-wearing trust baby’s statement. Natural gas vehicles are gaining in prominence as well.

The oil mafia is getting the message.

I wonder if they’ll drop it to $1.50/Gal...
I’m almost certain that the production and manufacture of Diesel and gasoline could be done very, very cheaply; IIUC the environmental regulations and what is essentially prohibition on building more refineries is the big bottleneck as far as supply goes. (It kinda makes me wonder how much a company could make if it ignored the government restrictions and built the biggest, most efficient refinery they could.)

Believing that an electric car is “green” and a combustion engine isn’t requires ignorance on how electricity is generated or the belief that it shows up at the outlet by magic.

Actually, what will happen next is cheap gas-to-liquid (GTL) conversion of natural gas to gasoline in a form that is very clean to burn. Thanks to new catalytic cracking systems, they can do it very soon at a cost way lower than making it from crude oil.

Imagine gasoline that could be sold at US$1.90/US gallon and still make a substantial profit.

Tesla has proven that electric cars are viable, ...

I don't believe this to be a true statement. Until, they can get charging time down they are not viable, merely, feasible. The idea of changeable battery packs would require service station acres of storage space and enormous amounts of current. God forbid the government gets involved in the design of replaceable batteries.
