My parents had chickens inside city limits (Redding, CA) when I was growing up.
Does California even allow that anymore?
I have had between 20-30 laying hens for the last six years. The eggs I eat almost every morning were laid less than a hour before meeting a frying pan. It doesn’t get any fresher than that.
“I dont understand why that would cause such a huge price increase on the east coast, as we have egg farms and poultry companies here.”
Did anyone at all on this thread read the entire article? It explains why the stupid CA law effects egg prices nationwide.
Most cities allow chickens. They may have a number you can have like 2 or 3 but most cities allow you to have backyard chickens. Most people do not know that.
Chickens are shy and clench up if anybody is around watching while they're trying to lay, and with the new 24/7 surveillance society and facebook...
I read the article, however, I know where my eggs come from at all the stores I shop... and it isn’t the west, or Mexico, it’s local or at least TN...not from the areas listed. The farms are listed on the cartons.
I pay $1.99 per dozen, and that’s up 40 cents in past two months...
Some FReepers have observed that everyone’s default tagline should read, “Proudly commenting without having read the article since [sign-up date].”
I’ll have to check the City ordinances. Don’t think my dog would be happy though :)
You must be one of the very few that read the article, and had the grey matter to comprehend what was written.
The CA law effects the entire nation unless the courts slap them down, and so far that isn’t happening.
ROFL... I know, that I would not be able to do it with someone watching...lol
My priest gets eggs from a parishioner and I thought the same thing!
The article explains why it will effect the prices nationally, it doesn’t matter what state you are in. Unless you get your eggs directly from a local farmer your price will go up.
It’s a long time FR tradition!
Stop the money.
Don’t donate to them even locally.
Interesting. I will never go vegan, so I guess I will have to get chickens, or move to another country. The chickens would be cheaper.
A month and a half ago, we drove from Kalifornia toward Phoenix, but diverted at Buckeye to avoid the metro area....along the semi-rural route we chose, we were surprised to see a couple of extremely huge “chicken house” operations; so some producers have already de-Kaliforniastaned.
It assumes directly into heaven as it is a miracle.
The problem is the courts are allowing the CA law to be pushed on every egg producer nationwide.
Most egg producers sell to national distributors that supply every state, there is no way to separate everything from the CA law. The CA market is too big to expect the national grocery store chains to stop selling eggs in their CA stores.
CA is chock full of liberal Demonrats, so the O’bastard administration won’t be any help in stopping it.
If it’s a Buddhist rooster (a Booster?) it lays an Ommmmlet.
If it’s a Bantam-weight rooster, it gets an eggshibition fight.
