I'm not amazed - the War on Drugs is the quintessential liberal program, utopian in its aims and serving only to provide salaries for those who implement it.

People tend to forget that Prohibition was as much the baby of Leftist social engineers as of Conservative puritans (it was the bastard child of both). The same is true of the war on drugs.

Have any of those other countries tried to foster Revolution in this hemisphere, like Cuba has?

The USSR and the rest of the Warsaw Pact certainly did back in the day. Yet we we had relations with all of them.

Castros are not dead yet and they have lined thousands up in front of ditches and mowed them and it is still being done if you open your month and say the wrong thing. THis is just more of Obama’s cozing up to dictators. The marxist, leftist bastard.

Good, there’s rich guys lining up to build resorts there

You mean a lot of suckers who will be left high and dry when Castro steals it, just like he stole all other foreign-owned property.

“I totally agree. Once people in communist countries are exposed to the “rest of the world” it doesn’t take long for the regime to fail...”

It is in fact the exact opposite.

It props them up, allows them to take credit for whatever improvements occur and solidify their power.

It allows the communist party members themselves to become very wealthy and then have undue influence in their country and internationally.

...and by sharp contrast, our 52 year trade embargo against Cuba worked wonders by overthrowing the Castros and the Cuban Communist Party. Oh, wait...

What a specious comment.

In 52 years they have not been able to further and export their revolution due to it and have not been able to be influential as they could have been.

Just think what sort of things they could have done in the 60’s and 70’s if they had been awash in US money.

I guess so.

They come out like cockroaches when it comes time to make a big push to strengthen communist dictators.

Frankly, it is time to get Cuba back into the first world. It is an amazing piece of real estate. I’d like to take advantage of it, especially for tourism and fruit trade. Castro may be a nutcase but the people aren’t.

I have yet to see a good explanation for why having diplomatic relations with China (and by the late 80’s, free trade agreements) is perfectly acceptable while doing the same with Cuba is unacceptable. Nor do I see why if such agreements and relations lead China in the direction of capitalism why they wouldn’t do the same for Cuba.

Umm, doesn’t the Senate have to approve normalization of diplomatic relations?

Castro may be a nutcase but the people aren’t.

Fidel is probably a vegetable and his brother won't be around much longer. Their successors will probably be "Communist" in name only, like the Chinese after Mao's death.

Go figure, we may wind up both with leaders named “Castro” in a few years.

Julian Castro, the new darling of the Democratic Party, is probably to the Left of his namesakes.
