WASHINGTON — President Obama has decided to sign legislation imposing further sanctions on Russia and authorizing additional aid to Ukraine, despite concerns that it will complicate his efforts to maintain a unified front with European allies, the White House said on Tuesday.

The legislation calls for a raft of new measures penalizing Russia’s military and energy sectors and authorizes $350 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including antitank weapons, tactical surveillance drones and counter-artillery radar. The bill was approved unanimously by Congress, but Mr. Obama hedged for days on whether he would sign it. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

The scene at a mall in central Moscow. Fearing inflation, Russians are reacting to the falling ruble by snapping up expensive items like appliances and laptops.

Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, announced the decision to approve the bill even as he described the president’s qualms over it. Mr. Earnest said it sent a “confusing message” internationally, including language “that does not reflect the consultations” with European powers. But in the end, he added, the president opted to allow the bill to become law because it does contain some flexibility that will give him room to maneuver.

I have no use for Putin but I hope we are ready to fight Russia because the last time we waged an economic war (Japan), you know what happened.

Well, that wasn’t exactly the last time we used an economic weapon. And the Japanese, like the NAZIS, would have found a reason for war no matter what we’d done. How well did they treat Nanking, and that city had done nothing to them?

In your mind, only surrender is the right answer to Putin.

” Obama’s gonna’ start a world war.”

He seems determined to do it.

More bad news for Putin, Putinstan...

Yeah, I'm sure they care.

Do you think there is a Russian forum where some members sit around posting bad U.S. economic news, while others at the site chortle at it?

As if Putin is gonna let Russia be pushed around by Gay-Boy. No way. Putin is a tyrant and thug and he’s gonna spank Gay-Boy one way or another. I’m keeping my head low, and I fear for the worst (war). I don’t like the looks of any of this, especially with a cowardly fudge packer as CIC, with a bevy of surrounding sycophants and strategic idiots.

The United States and NATO are bigger than just Obama, so you can lay off the Putin worship.

Putin is the one digging a hole for himself.

Interesting thread, you seem to have brought out the anti-American element that has been hiding lately.

They are peeved about Putin’s invasion plans running into obstacles.

350 million for the coup government. Meanwhile the USS Olympia that fired the opening shots in the Spanish American war, sits in Philadelphia, and is in desperate need of dry dock work costing 20 million. Naturally, that is being refused. The historic national treasure is probably going to be sunk as a reef.

Our embargo of Japan was the reason Japan felt it had to attack the US.

The Civil War started because the North decided to tax the crap out of the South, and the South didn’t see the legislative process being able to correct that.

If your goal is to launch a war in which the Shiites finally wipe out the Sunnis, this is the way to do it.

The Russians will say they had ‘no choice’ but to bomb Saudi Arabia, and because they are a petro-state, the KSA’s artificial manipulation of the market was the reason why the pumping had to stop. That the Iranians were motivated to invade the KSA through Southern Iraq was just precipitous.

The weird part - Valerie Jarrett and Huma Abedin are both Iranian.

Obama needed latitude after the election. Putin needed to be thrown into the briar patch. This will do it.

The KSA may be on fire before Christmas.

Israel will get the message. It’s over between us.
