DENVER Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper made good Friday on his promise to sue the federal government over its hotly contested move to list the Gunnison sage grouse under the Endangered Species Act.
The Colorado Attorney Generals office filed a notice of intent to sue with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Fish and Wildlife Service director Daniel M. Ashe, arguing that the agencys Nov. 12 decision to list the bird as threatened was flawed and failed to appreciate fully the impact of aggressive state and local conservation efforts.
The Service failed to use the best available science in its listing decision, said the six-page notice by Assistant Attorney General Lisa Reynolds. The best available scientific data indicates that the species is not warranted for protection under the ESA because the Gunnison basin population, which comprises the vast majority of the species individuals and occupied range, is not in danger of extinction now or in the foreseeable future.
The decision to list the Gunnison sage grouse, found only in southwestern Colorado and eastern Utah, was closely watched by state officials and wildlife advocates who believe it may foreshadow the agencys action on the greater sage grouse, which has a far larger habitat extending across 11 Western states.
A greater sage grouse listing could chill economic development throughout the rural West, including ranching, grazing and energy development.

Hicky sues feds.
Did he get back in?
Yep - unfortunately. The Californicator invaders voted this pinhead back in. The Republicans put up Bob again ....
Sage Grouse are already protected in Colorado and 1/3 of the state is public land and all the species of Grouse here have plenty of room. Ranches provide even better habitat as hunting pressure is lower on ranches.
Leave us alone, we can make these decisions just fine on our own. We’ve got Blue, Dusky, Sage, Gunnison, etc. These are just localized populations that are inbred. It’s perfectly natural that some species of these go away.
Leave nature alone as much as possible, you frickin’ busybodies.
Sadly, yes.
Well said, keep the feds out of it.
Sage grouse are fun to hunt and good eatin’!
Same kinda chit happening in Montana.
“Gunnison sage grouse”
another nonsense invention of the left.
For over 30 years envirowhackos have been inventing species differentiation where none exists. They do this specifically to be able to object to ANY development they choose.
Talk to biology students who’ve been assigned the field work to “find something unique” in a given area.
Exactly right. FReeper Flycatcher has verified several times that the enviro-nazis create subspecies for that purpose.
Broken clock gets it right occasionally
LOL! Exactly, my thought also when posting.
It's nonsense. Political nonsense. And they're well aware of it too.
Thanks for the Ping, Jaz!
Nice to see Hick get this right, but what a filthy hypocrite.
Thanks for the confirmation, Fly.
You couldn’t be more right about libs only resisting enviros and other nuts when it affects them or their state, hypocrites in the extreme.
I was amused and heartened to see the sage grouse mentioned in the big spending bill. C. J. Box next novel, called Endangered, is all about the sage grouse, and other things of course.
Hick , leftie celebrities, and other DUmmies own rural land for a tax dodge.
Bet they are now worried that ESA / EPA will take their investments .
BS PR move. The Republicans already banned protecting the sage grouse.
Yes, they put a rider in the omnibus bill to withhold funding, I posted the article but that doesn’t mean the enviros and administration won’t come back pursue it.
