Culture ministry says it will press charges against activists for damage to world heritage site as UN climate talks began in Lima
Greenpeace has apologised to the people of Peru after the government accused the environmentalists of damaging ancient earth markings in the countrys coastal desert by leaving footprints in the ground during a publicity stunt meant to send a message to the UN climate talks delegates in Lima.
A spokesman for Greenpeace said: Without reservation Greenpeace apologises to the people of Peru for the offence caused by our recent activity laying a message of hope at the site of the historic Nazca lines. We are deeply sorry for this.
Rather than relay an urgent message of hope and possibility to the leaders gathering at the Lima UN climate talks, we came across as careless and crass.
Earlier Perus vice-minister for culture Luis Jaime Castillo had accused Greenpeace of extreme environmentalism and ignoring what the Peruvian people consider to be sacred after the protest at the world renowned Nazca lines, a Unesco world heritage site.
He said the government was seeking to prevent those responsible from leaving the country while it asked prosecutors to file charges of attacking archaeological monuments, a crime punishable by up to six years in prison.

So some White tree huggers damage an environmentally sensitive area to make a point about our fragile planet. Kinda like screwing for virginity. Maybe a stint in a Peruvian prison would straighten out these privileged cupcakes.
In addition to prison time, I’d seek to permanently banish them from ever coming back.
I’d probably also see if fellow SA countries would be willing to kick them out permanently as well.
The Greenies should be glad that Peru is not going ‘all Aztec’ with them. The Aztecs were extremely brutal and savage in there worship rituals. I won’t describe them here just before dinner,
but the average Free Rep. already knows about it.
Seems like an extraordinary PR opportunity for them and their arrogance is breathtaking
He couldn’t even give a straight apology. He had to get his little narrative about the “message of hope” in there.
Sorry POS.
I can’t see that they did any damage. They broke the rules, and when they did that, they were laid bare. Serves them right I guess, what were they thinking?
Written in English, in Peru.
You can’t see the damage in the photo, but there is a LOT of it. I saw a photo imaged to bring out the damage, and it will take countless hours to repair. You could go read about it, but you don’t seem to appreciate preservation of a national treasure of archeology or ancient art itself very much.
Peruvians would be going ‘All Inca’ on them (almost as bad).
Then they could have Slick Willie fantasizing about their mummified remains.
Well, they walked inside the restricted area. I saw a statement that they had trampled some line, but I can't see what that might have been. Certainly, it was a stupid act. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
What a bunch of a**holes.
couldn’t they just photoshop it in, instead of damaging the site? They got too much money to waste I guess
Yeah
Yo no intiende...
Uncouth, degenerate pigs! How stupid can you be to think that a stunt like this could impress anyone or bring about some kind of environmental change? I hope they rot in jail for the rest of their sorry lives.
Damaging a World Heritage Site is an International crime, isn’t it?
Peru could easily ask Interpol to go after these klowns.
Or does pimping the Leftist narrative trump all laws, now?
Greenpeace should pay whatever it takes to return the site to its original condition. The miscreants that caused the damage should never leave jail.
Green peace is for abortion, turning man into a fruitless polutant.
Typical of them, taking hostage families and hijacking people’s properties
