LIMA, Peru Wilfredo Saavedra, a former Marxist rebel, led a convoy of some 300 activists from Perus northern sierra, wearing an anti-mining T-shirt and Cuban baseball cap. Jim Chomicz, 70, from Birmingham, Alabama, flew here with a church group to learn more about melting glaciers.
But for many of their Latin American counterparts, it is all about toppling capitalism, which they blame for the environmental degradation.
Capitalism is the creator of all of these changes to the climate, said Mr. Saavedra.
At a march this week, Ibis Fernández, a Peruvian union leader and organizer of the Peoples Climate Summit, summed up the view of many Latin American activists.
Raise your fist to change the system, and not the climate, she cried to a crowd of protesters, repeating a slogan taken from late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
In many ways, the divide among these groups over tackling climate change is a microcosm of the broader gulf between governments that have struggled to reconcile the positions of rich countries that are the main source of carbon-dioxide emissions and poorer nations that have experienced rapid development over the past decade thanks to a global commodities boom.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry pointed out that more than half of global emissions are now coming from developing countries.
Still, the organizers of the Peoples Climate Sumnmit issued a statement Thursday lambasting the patriarchal-capitalist system that maintains oppression and rejecting market-based mechanisms as a way to resolve climate change.

” LIMA, Peru Wilfredo Saavedra, a former Marxist rebel”
OK, we done here..
...and nobody saw this coming.
Where would union leaders be without capitalism?
Idiots. It is capitalism that allows them to be so stupid and not starve.
I’m SHOCKED to hear that an event called the “People’s [anything] Summit” would be anything less than completely objective, intelligent and honest. SHOCKED, I tell ya!
So you're saying capitalism is NOT without it's drawbacks?
Maybe they ought to tour all the toxic sites in eastern Europe left by former Communist regimes which are still being cleaned up a quarter century later.
Or the glorious People's Republic of North Korea. If they can get in.
On the left, the Aral Sea in 1989. On the right, the Aral Sea in 2014.
True capitalism is the free exchange of ideas, services, and goods between free people. It has created the greatest economy in the world that is the envy of every country. TNSTAAFL.
My point being, that if it makes continued oxygen theft by collectivist libtards more likely, it seems there IS a downside.
Ah , Russia is still falling apart
Climate Liars are commies? I’m shocked!
Yeah. Nothing is more idiotic than calling for communism in the names of the environment and human rights.
No surprises here. By “climate”, they mean Socialism.
The democratic lefts AGW climate change scam is toast. These Summit’s remind me of the scene in Animal House where all Belusi’s buddies are sitting around in a room and he stands up and starts to rush out the room with a come on are you with me scream and they just sit there not moving.
A former Marxist? Sounds like he is STILL A MARXIST...
Oh, I guess the Marxist regimes (USSR, China) were paragons of environmental virtue??? They were the worst polluters on earth. These people are mentally challenged.
