Nine males were accused of being part of a heinous rape. The alleged injustice fomented a mob mentality. An enraged community wanted to skip any talk of a serious investigation, never mind a trial, and go straight to the punishment.
Im not talking about the now-discredited allegations against fraternity members at the University of Virginia, but of the legendary case of the Scottsboro Boys, nine African-American teenagers falsely accused of rape in Alabama in 1931. Despite testimony from one of the women that she had made up the whole thing, the Scottsboro Boys were convicted in trial after trial. All served time in either jail or prison.

“...the accused in a rape case would have to prove consent to be found innocent...”
Young men in NZ had better video every encounter if they want to stay out of prison. Just amazing what’s happening in this world!
Or just ‘don’t sleep around’ — shocking thought!
The War on Heterosexual men continues!
Neo-Victorianism at the end of the end of the barrel of the gun.
Yeah, and what if their wife decides to accuse them of rape? Being married is no defense.
You don’t have to leave the monastery to be falsely accused of rape.
“The most notorious recent example is the 1989 case of the Central Park Five, in which four African-American teens and one Latino were wrongly accused and convicted of brutally raping a white woman in New York.”
Wrongly accused? They confessed and were convicted! The victims’ blood, hair, and DNA was all over them.
Unless video taping it is also a crime.

The persuasive physical evidence against the five teens had apparently been misinterpreted. The physical evidence --- according to this account --- better fit the details provided by the man who ultimately confessed.
“The persuasive physical evidence against the five teens had apparently been misinterpreted.”
The CP 5 didn’t accidentally get the victim’s blood and hair on themselves. They didn’t confess without prompting to a crime they had no knowledge of. Reyes didn’t rape her and hold her down with multiple pairs of hands, while he was acting alone.
Just because DNA shows now that Reyes also raped the victim, does not mean that the CP 5 suddenly became innocent.
From what I read, there were a number of assaults in Central Park on that same night, with gangs of black teens going around "wilding." Maybe the Central Park Five were guilty of an assault, or assaults, but just not that assault.
In any case, their conviction was vacated when the actual assailant confessed years later --- and he was the only one DNA-linked to the victim.
