CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) A man accused of assaulting a police officer trying to arrest him is free after invoking a Colorado law that allows homeowners to use force to protect themselves.
A jury in Cortez, Colorado acquitted 38-year-old Shane French of assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest Monday after 3 ½ hours of deliberations.

Cops en masse are rioting and looting in the streets due to this miscarriage of justice. Oh, they aren’t?
I would call the police to take a report for insurance purposes, or if I wanted a strange dog shot and didn't want to do it myself. Otherwise, there are not many situations in which adding police makes things better.

But realize in the mental health field people are instructed to call 911 if there is a mental health emergency. That is the protocol.
Because being struck is the same as being killed, right?
Eubanks previously testified that he vaguely remembers the night in question. Armed with a lapel-mounted camera, Eubanks captured the apprehension on video. At the end of the 10-minute recording, Eubanks stated, I should have (expletive deleted) shot that (expletive deleted).
I bet he really wishes that now.
Looks like juries are not automatically on the side of police officers anymore.
I would assume she was afraid of her son. Dealing with the mentally ill having an “episode” is not a matter of just speaking to them in a soothing voice. This man had been in and out of mental institutions for years for violent episodes.
This is a very weird decision, although since he was probably back on his meds at the time of his trial, he probably appeared fairly harmless.
However, the officers had been called and requested to enter the house by the man’s mother, and when he picked up two knives and ran towards them, the one officer grabbed him in a bear hug and brought him down (instead of shooting him, which he certainly could have done).
The guy had to be tased four times by the other officers before he could be subdued enough to be taken to the hospital.
“(Officer) Eubanks testified that French injured him as he held French in a “bear hug”, picked him off his feet and threw him down the ground”
I don’t know what “make my day” has to do with this. The cop was basically charging this guy for hurting his knuckles with his face and the jury didn’t think it was funny.
If I read this correctly, the mental patient charged the officer after being tased four times, and had knives in his hands. The officer successfully managed to restrain the mental patient without shooting him.
WELL DONE!
Free Donuts for him for a year!
YMMV.
If he’s now called a ‘peace’ officer, why does he carry a gun?
