An action alert sent to Capitol Hill staffers from CQ Roll Call suggests that House Speaker John Boehners plan to fund President Barack Obamas executive amnesty action for illegal aliens in a CR-omnibus bill may be beginning to fall aparteven as Nancy Pelosis top lieutenant Steny Hoyer has been pushing Democrats to help Boehner pass it.
The first sign of a crack in the coalition is that the billa more-than-$1 trillion omnibus that funds all of government except for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through the end of the 2015 fiscal year in Septembermay not be introduced on Monday. GOP leaders were hoping to have the text out today. The bill is expected to fund Obamas amnesty and all the rest of DHS through March 2015, and GOP leaders including Boehner have not pledged to fight it even then.
Senior GOP aides say the text of the so-called cromnibus may not be released Monday, as initially anticipated, CQ Roll Call said in the alert. Several issues appeared to be holding up last-minute negotiations on the wrap-up government spending package, the staffers said. Lawmakers will likely need to clear a very short-term continuing resolution, since current spending expires Dec. 11. A House GOP appropriations aide said the committee hopes to file that bill tonight.

> If the Cowards wont fight now they never will!
Nothing of the sort is getting through the Senate until the next one is sworn in. In the meantime a shutdown looms. Whether it will be damaging to the pubs is debatable. That said, funding through March is better than funding through the end of the entire fiscal year. It sets up the fight to begin from approximately the beginning of February.
The idea is to get it past Obama’s veto or not do it at all. There seems to be no heart for not passing a funding bill at all and leaving with the country unfunded for about 2 months....something it could handle, iirc.
However, even with the new Senate, the issue will still be getting something past Obama’s veto that stops his executive amnesty. I think the lawsuits of the 19 states will eventually stop him, but that’s a year out, even though the Scotus has original jurisdiction on it.
Unfunding it is the only way to slow it down, but how to avoid a presidential veto? To me, the idea of putting a funding bill on the president’s desk that funds everything with funding for ICE expiring in a few months is NOT a bad idea. When funding for immigration runs out, it just runs out. There is no action of the president that can prevent it from running out.
But...
I thought the same as you at first: a reasonable response to the amnesty.
What about everything else? The IRS abuses, Obamacare, EPA overreach and a dozen other issues.
Why give Obama a year’s budget to do what he wishes on everything else and only sunset the amnesty?
There’s no reason to not pass a short CR now and pass all these appropriation bills in the new congress one at a time.
I agree with a short CR now, except that the Republicans are not now in charge of the Senate. I think the funding runs out Dec 16??? Something like that. That would mean about a month or two of living off of shuffled and reshuffled funds, which I believe in past debt cliff negotiations has proven to be possible.
It will be presented as “Shut down the government”, and the Rinos WILL NOT go for it. They just won’t. Even though Cruz proved that ‘shutting down the government’ has no impact, the Rinos use that as a reason for not advancing.
So, I’d prefer a short CR, but we’re not going to get it.
Will Boehner ignore the Hastert rule and allow rinos and democrats to combine their strength to pass the bill IF he has to?
I’m pretty sure he will. He’ll come back to a new congress, and loyalty pledges were required for election support. Sadly, we’ll have Boehner again. No one will support anyone who challenges him.
Right? Is there no elevator he can be stuck in or defenestration opportunity?
If they knew their vote for Boehner was what would cost them their own job they would run him over in a second
“Id prefer a short CR, but were not going to get it.”
Actually we ARE going to get a short CR!
Funding runs out the 11th.
The ‘Cromnibus’ is running late so they’ll pass one for one or two days while they cram the ‘cromnibus’ through.
So, of course, they could pass one for three weeks until the new congress comes.
Sure Reid or Obama could refuse but I don’t see how Reid or Obama ‘win’ by shutting down the government over a ‘clean’ short CR.
We do have enough votes to block Boehner from getting the Speakership in January with Republican votes.
I assume the Dems would make up for those votes... a bipartisan Speaker????
Or would the rest of our caucus finally revolt against him if he turned to the Dems to elect him Speaker... I think so.
A liberal has started a cromnibus twitter account.
Ha! Kill the Bill
I also wonder where Ted Cruz is. He is such a tireless warrior that I suspect he is very involved in this battle to stop the funding bill.
