I-594: They passed it, now we get to see what’s in it

On Tuesday, USA Today reported that anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety – a heavy financial supporter of I-594 – is now active in at least a dozen states, emboldened by what the newspaper said was a “string of victories” last month. The story noted that, “Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety also is weighing similar background-check initiatives in Arizona and Maine, and is backing one already underway in Nevada.

I’d love an amendment which required all Federal legislation to be no more than 20 pages long. If you go longer, you’re probably engaging in social engineering, not actual law-making. If states want to do complex pieces, that’s their business, but at the Federal level, things should be pretty simple. Per the Constitution, the Feds don’t have that much authority, so keep it short, keep it simple, keep it clear.

As long as we’re dreaming, hows about a “pass a law, repeal a law” requirement?

Congress must repeal an old law for every new law it passes!

Maybe the better way to go is to have every gun owner report to the nearest police station & demand to be arrested for illegally handing a gun to another person. When there are 10 or 20 thousand new criminal cases to deal with each week, maybe people will realize how stupid they’ve been.

If I lied in Washington today, I would have committed three felonies this morning.

While hunting, I passed a shotgun to my son and let him hunt with it, then I loaned a spare one to a buddy for his son to use for a few days.

Finally, when we got home, I had my son carry my gun into the house.

I’m such a criminal.

I do live in WA. I assure you this law will be widely disregarded. At least among those who haven’t lost their guns in boating accidents which happen often in these parts. We DO have a lot of water around here.

I doubt it would pass in Maine.

Sure, southern Maine and many of the coastal areas have plenty of moonbats, but the fact is this: people in Maine are heavily armed and have a love of firearms.

On November 4th, our TEA Party governor, one of the most conservative governors in America, was re-elected. He is very pro-2nd Amendment.

The second Congressional district....the largest in area east of the Mississippi.....it covers 80% of Maine.....elected a conservative with an “A” rating from the NRA. His name is Bruce Poliquin.

Also, the Republicans won control of the Maine Senate and increased their numbers in the Maine House. So an I-594 bill would have a hard time passing in Maine. As a ballot measure like in Washington state, it would be a battle royale here in The Pine Tree State.

I hope the NRA and GOA sue to overturn I-594 in Washington.
Or find a friendly conservative judge to overturn it.
That’s what the libs always do when a conservative ballot measure passes somewhere.

Overturning things like this only works for the libiots. Doesn’t work for conservatives. Just part of the equality plan.

What if I want to move to WA, and I still have a few guns trapped under the seat of my boat that did not get lost.

Is there any ‘importing’ process, or ‘registering’ required?

I tried to read the I-954 text and did not find restrictions, but ... can’t really tell how the law will be implemented.

Heard anything along these lines from up there?

There should be a hard limit to the total number of words in law. Once you hit the limit, you need to remove existing laws.

"Is there any ‘importing’ process, or ‘registering’ required?"

It cover transfers. Lot's of handwringing over what can be construed as a transfer, but the initiative as written in the ballot handbook basically adds a background check in private sales. IMHO a solution in search of a problem because most private sellers listed on gun websites and required a CCW and a DL.

Also if the way they are enforcing the new legal pot laws are any indication, it will cause less scrutiny in sales.

what should be done is repal every law passed since 1936,and pass one more law making it aganist the law to pass any more laws, then the fat cats can get their hats and go home.

Better still, pass a constitutional amendment to require all federal laws and regulations to sunset within ten years. They may not be extended and must be reauthorized by Congress as new legislation or concurrence in the case of departmental rule making.

Please be careful. You know that the bloomin’ libiots will be out in force with cameras and cell phones aplenty to use against you when they turn you in for “handing a gun to someone” OMG!. And since I’m not aware of your current legislative make up(pro 2nd vs NO 2nd), they will no doubt raise all kinds of hell with leo and legislators alike to cause you trouble. The very least of which will be disorderly conduct. Isn’t/wasn’t there something either in I-594 or the initiative process that prevents the WA legislature from amending this POS for two years or something like that?

There's no gun registration. LE in the rural counties is going to ignore the whole transfer thing unless a firearm gets used in a real crime. Expect sheriff's deputies to share their private guns among friends at the dump just like everybody else does.
