Several key aspects of the account of a gang rape offered by a University of Virginia student in Rolling Stone magazine have been cast into doubt, including the date of the alleged attack and details about the alleged attacker, according to interviews and a statement from the magazine backing away from the article.
The U-Va. fraternity chapter where the alleged attack took place in September 2012 released a statement Friday afternoon denying that such an assault took place in its house. Phi Kappa Psi said that it has been working with police to determine whether the account of a brutal rape at a party there was true. The fraternity members say that several important elements of the allegations were false.
A group of Jackies close friends, who are sex assault awareness advocates at U-Va., said they believe something traumatic happened to Jackie but also have come to doubt her account. They said details have changed over time, and they have not been able to verify key points of the story in recent days. A name of an alleged attacker that Jackie provided to them for the first time this week, for example, turned out to be similar to the name of a student who belongs to a different fraternity, and no one by that name has been a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Rolling Stones editors apologized to readers for discrepancies in the story, issuing a statement and posting it on their Web site. Will Dana, Rolling Stones managing editor, said there is fresh doubt about the account.
In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackies account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced, he said in the statement.

“I am questioning whether Jackie even exists.”
“Jackie” may be about as real as Lena Dunham’s “Barry”.
I love this part from the WaPo’s interview with Jackie:
He never said he was in Phi Psi, she said, while noting that she was positive that the date function and attack occurred at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house on Sept. 28, 2012. I know it was Phi Psi because a year afterward my friend pointed out the building to me and said thats where it happened.
Her friend pointed out the Phi Psi building to her a year later, and told HER that’s where it happened? How did her friend know?
U dont write something like that without verification. Just terrible for them to do that.
“”The fraternity members say that several important elements of the allegations were false.””
No one finds that a ludicrous statement? What would important elements be in a story that is false to begin with?
If there are not major libel suits from this then there is no such thing as libel. The frat should get all the millions they can from Rolling Stone ... then throw a REAL beer party!
I think she meant “That’s where I met them afterwards”.
I suspect she got roofied and went haywire.
How about a zero tolerance for false accusations of rape?
Excellent.
I noticed that too. WTF?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure Jackie is delusional. The WaPo article makes me think that girl should be in the loony bin. Her “facts” don’t check out, but she’s sticking by her story? I bet she would change her tune in a courtroom.
