A Staten Island grand jury cleared an NYPD cop in the chokehold death of Eric Garner during his caught-on-video arrest for peddling loose cigarettes, the Staten Island district attorney confirmed Wednesday.

The panel voted a “no-bill” and dismissed all potential charges against Officer Daniel Pantaleo.

The blockbuster decision capped weeks of investigation by the special grand jury, which was empaneled in September specifically to review evidence in Garner’s racially charged death.

In a statement released by his union, Pantaleo said: “I became a police officer to help people and to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”

“It is never my intention to harm anyone and I feel very bad about the death of Mr. Garner,” he added....

I trust the Grand Jury when the results make sense.. The NY jury was racially balanced ...so i tend to think there must be something we do not know here.. because the video is damning IMHO

For those of you that are uncomfortable with this police action you should look up the video of 12 year old Tamir Rice. Killed by police last week. You will be shocked.

One was in Cleveland and one was in New York City. What’s the connection?

I think this case will be different because unlike the Michael Brown death, this was truly a case of a police officer really using excessive force.

also it looks like he was out of compliance with dept policy whereas Wilson followed policy.

IMHO, “number 99” was as much of a thug as Michael Brown. It would be interesting to see how the DA presented this to the GJ, perhaps skewed towards that result.

That’s the real crime. That selling cigarettes is a crime. When I was a kid we used to say that it’s a free country. Not any longer. By the way, when I was a kid my aunt sent me to the store to buy her cigarettes. Perfectly legal. My grandfather sent me to buy chewing tobacco. I never, ever have used either.

The connection is someone is dead at the hands of police that shouldn’t be. In this case it was a twelve year old boy who was shot two seconds after the police squad car raced up to him. The cop that fired the fatal shots exited his vehicle and fired one second later. The boy had a plastic air soft gun in his waistband but never had a chance to comfy before be was shot. There are no words to describe this inexcusable shooting.

So you’d “bet your life” that a toy or BB gun isn’t real? Because that’s what you’re asking the officer to do. How does one tell? From what I’ve read, the orange marking was painted over in black. And articles I’ve read say he was reaching for the gun.

You need to see the video.

When you decide to become a police officer you assume the risks involved. Police don't have the option to shoot first then find out if there was a real threat later. Police officers must be absolutely certain that their life or the lives of others are in peril before using lethal force. If this means taking cover to make sure the gun is real then that what you have to do. If this means holding fire until fired upon then that's what you have to do when you where a badge. Our military very often work under rules of engagement where they don't just get to shoot at perceived threats. We have no less expectation of law enforcement, in fact that expectation is even higher.

I’ve been all over these Garner threads tonight and it’s amazing the people who speak so author actively about what he died of. Yet, if you read the article, it says the oppositite of what they’d have you believe!

OTOH, it was the grand jury ... And they found lack of evidence to induct.

I'll just say this....the cops using brutal force for stinking illegal cigs is ridiculous.....we don't care if he sells illegal cigarettes to make a few bucks....we hire you cops to protect us from real crime like rape and murder....

and isn't it common knowledge that heavy people are particularly susceptible to respiratory problems when they're pounced on and their necks wrung?

gentle ben and saint trayvon were punks and thugs....I don't think guy was....he had young children....he was swinging gun nor a wife....he was not harming anyone...

he was "not" swinging a gun nor a knife....and okay, maybe he wasn't a saint but he wasn't deserving of this....

just like Waco...the cops think they can do whatever they want nor matter the consequences....too bad all those little kids got killed....just too bad....

btw I think that's when all this arrogant cop stuff started....Ruby Ridge and Waco....when the govt killed women and children and got away with it...

You don’t knowe a dam thing about what you are talkin about.

If a 6’ plus guy over 300 lbs in weight clocked you in the head jerk, you would be showing it. They originally said Wilson had a smashed orbit. He looked perfectly fine to me.

There is a multiplicity of issues involved here. Unless you haven’t read any of the other posts here on law enforcement,
THEY ARE OUT OF CONTROL.

Brown was a big guy and he was clearly trouble and Wilson should have known he needed back up to handle him if he didn’t
know martial arts.

Now Ferguson is a smoldering ruin and those bastards Obama and Holder now have an issue to put them in a positive light in the media.

This is a case where I would be pleased as pie if the cop was tarred, feathered. and locked away for a long time. The man was under control and the cop used an illegal hold which proved fatal, despite hearing the guys pleas because he couldn’t breathe. I’d pull the switch on this one.
