"Did he mistake the poor guy for a dog?"

An after-Halloween party combined with an unfortunate costume choice,

It was an accident waiting to happen...

Where’s Al, Jesse, and Eric? How come they haven’t whipped up a riot yet? Could it be because the elections are over?

Don’t take your gun out if there is no threat is another good one

officers who follow that advice are often referred to as corpses.

No, but I’ve seen what departments on the West Coast have done to attract minority officers. The standards were lowered. You can become an officer today with less going for you and a lot more negatives. The same thing was done for women with regard to other standards.

It is a valid issue to review in the process.

“I believer there were a number of contributing factors that resulted in this accidental shooting.”

The number 1 reason for this is cops are no longer afraid of making mistakes. They watched numerous other shootings like this, and even the Dorner hunt foul ups. And the lesson they took away is that no one was punished.
Toss in training cops to be paranoid, and the results are predictable.

As for training, sorry no pass. He is a grown man who is carrying a weapon professionally. He is responsible for knowing what he is doing with it. A heart surgeon can’t blame his professor. A truck driver doesn’t get to blame his teachers.

“I can’t imagine living with what this man is going to have to live with for the rest of his life.”

Who cares what he feeeeels? He killed a man without cause. Arguably murdered him by deliberately taking unsafe actions.

And you assume he feels anything but fear of being punished. Given that cops aren’t learning from these events, I seriously doubt they care about their victims.

His feeelings mean nothing to any good citizen.

“officers who follow that advice are often referred to as corpses. “

So instead we’re the ones who end up as corpses. Thanks.

If you or a member of your family decided to become a cop, do you think either of you would soon come to a place where you wouldn’t care if you killed someone accidentally or not?

I don’t think that’s true. I don’t believe it to be true of others. Could there be a few out there like this? Perhaps. It’s just not the main stream thought for police officers.

There are hundreds of thousands of police officers out there. We hear about the times when mistakes are made. Sometimes we extrapolate out what seems to make sense, but hearing opposing thoughts are important on these matters. They cause us to think, to realize there may be another explanation out there.

Do you think this young officer blew this off, it didn’t really affect him negatively? I’ll bet the guy is very shaken up by it. I’ll bet he questions his decision to join the force. I think it’s probably a life changing event for him.

Of course he doesn’t have it as bad as the guy that was killed, but he will carry this with him for the rest of his life. How would you feel if you had done this? Is there a reason to think he would feel differently about it?

Go with the human nature you know in yourself. Don’t think these are people who are totally different than you. Yes they go through training, but they do so because they are going to come up against the worst people in our society.

You either develop a tough skin, or you can’t do your job. It’s still a job that down deep inside causes them the same types of anguish you would have.

“If you or a member of your family decided to become a cop, do you think either of you would soon come to a place where you wouldn’t care if you killed someone accidentally or not?”

Sorry, I’m just not buying it. Cops happily participate in all kind of wrong activities that moral people would not do to others. SWAT raids, knowing they will cause harm to innocent people. Harm both physical and mental. And always not caring about the mistakes. Proof? They still raid even after many serious mistakes have happened. That is a clear statement they are okay with screwing up and hurting people.

Cops routinely degrade citizens, like in the case of the cop slapping a guy for not voluntarily allowing a search. He did it, and two other cops watched, none cared. Officer Harless of Canton OH, and the massive support he got from LE officers.
Cops routinely comport themselves in the most disrespectful manner they can, talking down to people like they were nothing. And the other cops let them.

Cops routinely ignore the crimes of other cops, even crimes against people. Even murder. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3228539/posts
That Blue Line is a religion to them.

Now we get to incidents like this, the screw ups in the Dorner hunt, and countless other shootings. Cops ALWAYS expect a pass on these events. That is a clear statement of what they think of the value of our lives.

So sorry, I’m not buying that they are just like me and mine. LE deliberately attracts the wrong guys, http://www.theagitator.com/2012/07/05/two-videos-two-cities-two-attitudes/
That attracts thrill seekers and bullies.

then teaches them that wrong behavior is okay. That it won’t be punished. IT CHANGES THEM. Under such conditions, even well intentioned people are going to find it easy to slide into wrong attitudes and behaviors.
