A homemade sign proclaiming “AIDS, Ebola, Obama – Thanks Africa” caused a commotion in the town of Minden, Nebraska this week after a local man drew the ire of area residents when he erected it on his own property.

The roadside sign was first spotted in the town of barely 3,000 on Monday this week, and it quickly created a stir on the internet as it was shared on the web first by Nebraskans, then soon the rest of the world.

Myself? I would personally dare those “ired” citizens to come and try to take down the sign.

We will see real quick what property rights are under Barry. Expect an IRS or EPA visit.

I think it’s a fantastic sign, and I am considering copying it for my own yard.

Something can only be ‘controversial’ if it upsets liberals.

To be fair, it isn’t the people of the continent of Africa who (mostly) spread AIDS all over this land.

This looks like the billboard bearing equivalent of a troll.

Aids originated in Africa——I think that’s what the billboard means.

Minden is a fine town with one of the best pioneer museums in the country. The Mrs. and I visited there on our honeymoon. Very well worth the out of the way stop. Plus the motel which the museum owners run was comfortable, cozy and reasonable.

As I recall the story, the fellow who invented flexible glass (sold on rolls like linoleum or carpet) made a fortune on the stuff during the depression as his invention was much cheaper and more durable than regular glass.

He was an avid antique collector and gave his fabulous museum to his hometown as a gift.

Another Minden hometown boy who made good was Carl T. Curtis. He was first elected to congress during FDR's depression, and promptly became a thorn in the side for FDR and other librards for the next 40 years of his storied career.

Not bad for a town of less than 3000 people.

There was a reason why Africa was called “the Dark Continent.”

Now we have several more!

SHOULD NPR HAVE APOLOGIZED FOR “DARK CONTINENT?”
http://www.npr.org/blogs/ombudsman/2008/02/should_npr_have_apologized_for.html

Originially, the term “dark continent” came into use in the 19th century to describe a continent largely unknown and mysterious to Europeans. Explorer Henry M. Stanley used it in his 1878 book, Through the Dark Continent.

In fact, it is still used today, but in context. Because of the dearth of electricity on much of the continent, satellite imaging from outer space depicts much of Africa at night as literally a dark continent. An article in The Economist last July, on how investors view Africa, refers to it as the “dark continent.” “With all this concern of offending people, it is important for people to understand why and where the term exists,” said Neal Weintraub, an author of four books on investing, who provided NPR The Economist example.
