SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ten years after banning the use of firing squads in state executions, Utah lawmakers on Wednesday endorsed a proposal to allow the practice again to avoid problems with lethal-injection drugs.

The proposal from Republican Rep. Paul Ray of Clearfield would call for a firing squad if the state cannot obtain the lethal injection drugs 30 days before the scheduled execution.

Utah dropped firing squads out of concern about the media attention, but Ray said it's the most humane way to execute someone because the inmate dies instantly.

Gary Gilmore's last words: Let's do it.

I saw at least one of the t-shirts, back in the day, with the quote and the fake bullet holes in it. May have seen others but it wasn't that big of a deal. I remember the first or only one, regardless.

Had to look that one up.

Use in slang

Huckleberries hold a place in archaic American English slang. The tiny size of the berries led to their use as a way of referring to something small, often affectionately as in the lyrics of Moon River. The phrase “a huckleberry over my persimmon” was used to mean “a bit beyond my abilities”. “I’m your huckleberry” is a way of saying that one is just the right person for a given job.[7] The range of slang meanings of huckleberry in the 19th century was fairly large, also referring to significant persons or nice persons.
