Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) came under fire for refusing to permit Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) to vote by proxy in the Democratic caucus. Duckworth, a double-amputee veteran of the Iraq War, is eight months pregnant and was unable to travel to Washington for the vote due to her pregnancy. Pelosi refused to allow Duckworth to vote by proxy, saying that the exception may spark a "slippery slope."
The Daily Show's host Jon Stewart feels otherwise. In a segment titled "Petty Woman," Stewart skewers Pelosi for her hypocrisy of previously touting the importance of voting (including early voting), filing briefs on behalf of pregnant women, and being awarded by women and family groups for refusing to permit Duckworth to vote. Stewart accuses Pelosi of engaging in petty inter-party politics, as Duckworth did not support Pelosi's preferred candidate to head the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Can you imagine what nazi pelosi’s response to this would be if a republican majority leader didn’t let a pregnant female rep vote by proxy b/c she’s too far along in pregnancy to make the trip to DC?
Can you imagine the “war on women”, “repubs want them pregnant barefoot and in the kitchen” stuff that would come out of her, every other democrat, and every other democrat media propagandist? for weeks?

That was very wrong of Pelosi to do. The democrats use people as pawns and we see in this case.
It would be nice to see Tammy come out and denounce this but since she is a true liberal (pro abortion), can’t see her taking a stand much.
Don’t even see any elected democrats on TV complaining how their party is misleading the public. Government is taken over by enemies, indeed.

but it is also calculated deflection. they have to channel the rage they know they will cause their unwitting underlings somewhere other than themselves, the true folks who are to blame. so they create goldsteins. goldsteins that often don’t exist, so they can’t talk/fight back.

I know, I did a search of her in votesmart.org and checked on her endorsement and ratings. She received 100 percent ratings from NARAL and Planned Parenthood, but 0% from the National Right to Life committee

I wouldn’t call it “political correctness”, I would call it “tact”.
To tell the truth, I do not care a whit what Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert have to say about anything.
Under Robert’s Rules, it is not at the discretion of the presiding officer to grant proxies. Proxies are not allowed unless they are specifically permitted. An amendment to allow proxies would generally require previous notice.
Now, neither the House nor the Senate are under Robert’s Rules - they have their own.
I am unsure what rules the party caucuses operate under.
However it is a bad idea for the presiding officer to have the discretion to grant proxies. It is rare that these votes are all that close, but if the vote were close a proxy would be granted to an ally and denied to an opponent.
Duckworth’s quarrel shouldn’t be with Pelosi - it should be with the entire Democrat caucus.
I may be going against the grain here, but if the rule is no voting by proxy, then there should be no voting by proxy. Mark this as the only time Demoncrats are in favor of upholding rules (laws) the way they are written.
