If they had a proper backstop and weren’t drinking I don’t see an issue. I’m guessing those conditions weren’t met.

So now I can’t shoot up my own house if I want to? Where does this stop?

Nope, they’ve made the discharge of a firearm within the city limits illegal. used to be shooting on your own property was quite legal, while sodomy in the privacy of your bedroom was illegal. Now sodomy in your private bedroom is legal, and the discharge of your firearm or even owning an unpermitted firearm in your own home is illegal. What next....

Front door just happened to be open, huh? Sounds fishy to me.

Yeah, cause everyone practicing shooting guns in the basement leaves the front door open. BS.

I live in the county. I can still shoot as long as the bullet doesn’t cross over the property li e and I don’t endanger anyone.

My neighbor the retired army lt col calls the police anytime he hears a shot though complaining about the noise.

I am reminded of a story my Dad tells from time to time. My Great Grandfather horse traded for a rifle and wanted to try it out, but it was raining and he didn’t feel like standing outside.

The farmhouse had a central hallway from the front door to the back door and he pinned a target onto an oak in the backyard.

He set up on the front porch and fired a few rounds through the house.

I’m told that it went something like this(in heavy Yankee accent):

“Okay - everybody sit still!” BOOM.

“How was that?” “A little low ya say?”

“Nodody move!” BOOM.

I might start shooting every morning (one shot) and another shot roughly hourly until 9:00 pm in response to that sort of neighbor.

As for the door open, I can imagine leaving it open to clear the smoke. But only between rounds of shooting.

:). I knew a guy who fired a shot at a deer from the drivers side of a Cadillac through the passenger window. Course he was nuts and a bad shot.

We live in the country and hear gunshots all the time. Ranchers most likely. Doesn’t bother me a bit.

Probably some college kids or liberals paid by the Obama administration to create a news story for nationwide attention to once again create alarm among the hoplophobiaites.

Funny timing; just yesterday I was eating out with a large group and sitting next to a gal and the topic of guns came up at the table; about how more people are carrying the nowadays because of the insanity and state of affairs that the nation has descended into since we we went all hope and changy and I asked her if she carried and she said “oh no, I’m deathly afraid of them”. I asked her if she’d ever fired a gun before and if she said “no” and that she didn’t care to. I also said they don’t kill anybody unless someone holds the gun and pulls the trigger. I’ve had this conversation many hoplophiaites. The sad fact is that they’ve never had anyone show them how to use one or how much fun target practice or hunting with one is. Therein lies the problem.

Having a shooting range in a house is rather nutty. Even with a backstop.

Firsts, most houses do not have enough room for shooting a reasonable distance. Second, one must have a very effective ventilation system in order to prevent lead exposure and breathing the fumes of burned propellant. And the noise would have to be controlled to conform with local ordinances.

Alcohol and firearms do not mix. Anyone allowing drinking in his range is crazy.

So what can you do? Air rifles and pistols are a great solution. They are very quiet, and there are extremely good quality air arms available. They are cheaper to shoot. They do not require a long distance for a range. They do not produce as much indoor pollution. It is easier to keep a pneumatic weapon clean. If they shoot diablo pellets, they are less lethal, and thus safer for use in a home or populated area.

Where I live the noise ordinance prohibits a sound level greater than 85 dB within 10 feet of the property line during daylight hours. That is actually a very generous allowance, because 85 dB is quite noisy. A basement air-rifle range would be much quieter than this, particularly if one added some sound-deadening.

As a matter of prudence, one should not wish outsiders even to know that you have a nice air-rifle range in your house. No use encouraging attention from the wrong sorts of people.

I can remember my uncle, an Iwo vet had a gun shop in his basement. He was in a wheel chair and had a elevator to his basement so was able to get large tree sections down there to shoot into. But I remember a lot of hole is the basement walls. He would yell up to my Aunt in the kitchen, “Ready” and then fire.

There’s a big difference between someone living on several acres of land firing a weapon and a zero lot line property, a .22 caliber vs .40 caliber, and having target practice at 5:00 pm vs 11:30 pm....but I do get your point...: )
