Close to 700 members of the Minnesota Army National Guard will be deployed to West Africa this spring to help with the Ebola outbreak in Liberia.

The soldiers will be from the Rosemount-based 34th Red Bull Infantry Division, according to a statement from the Minnesota National Guard.

The Red Bulls will not treat Ebola patients, but will work with operations, logistics, personnel and resources in assistance to U.S. military forces that are supporting the United States Agency for International Development's response.

The troops will receive medical training to ensure they are protected from exposure to the virus.

Pulled from their civilian jobs to boot. Infantry, not seabees, not military police, not corpse men. Well, the jury will be out on the latter.

Join the Army and you get sent to the pest-holes of the world to hand out supplies. This will keep people from volunteering and will hollow out our forces, just as the enemies of our country planned.

The Guard, both Air and Army are having a hard time getting people as it is. As my son says “half are too stupid and the other half are too fat”. All these deployments have just about used all the military up. The Guard is in worse shape because so many have to leave their businesses and jobs. It’s bad enough to be doing what you were trained for. Using them for labor in the “garden spots” of the world will finish them off. Infantry does not build, it destroys.

When will the National Guard be used to actually guard this nation?

The Guard, both Air and Army are having a hard time getting people as it is...

That's why most active duty, initial enlistments include more IRR(guard/reserve) time than active duty. They basically have you another 4-6 for more active duty.
