Islamic State militants have beheaded Peter Kassig, a U.S. aid worker and ex-Army Ranger who was captured last year in Syria while on a private humanitarian mission, the White House confirmed Sunday.
U.S. officials authenticated a 16-minute video, released on various social networks by the militant group earlier in the day. The video also includes footage of the mass beheading of men said to be Syrian government soldiers.
"Today we offer our prayers and condolences to the parents and family of Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known to us as Peter," President Obama said in a statement released by the White House, using the name Kassig adopted after converting to Islam. "We cannot begin to imagine their anguish at this painful time."

There is a cruel lesson here - even converting to Islam shall in no way provide you any protection against the truly lunatic and bloodthirsty pirates that claim to be the nucleus of the caliphate state that is ISIS. They are entirely undeserving of any mercy or forbearance in the eyes of the rest of the world, and that includes some 90% of all Muslims.
Most Muslims are even more intimidated by these bold and ruthless tactics than Westerners, because they know the enemy is very close, ready to slash down upon any of them almost instantaneously. The Kurds, bless their souls, have seen ISIS for what it is, and resist their advances with every fiber of their beings. Our best and most practical move would be to deliver arms and assistance DIRECTLY to the Kurds, who are the most motivated force out there with any intention of stopping ISIS.
Point of fact, almost all the non-Kurdish people in the Middle East are deathly afraid of what an aroused and determined peshmerga could do to any of them. The peshmerga are murderous, they are cruel, and if anything even more ruthless than ISIS. If you are going to bring the outlaws into line, hire the most formidable outlaw to be the sheriff, and see how quickly the town gets cleaned up. This was demonstrated over and over in the great American Wild West.
Diplomacy is not the Kurds’ strong suit.
