“would have taken 15 years to go through the process of gaining legal status, and that it also would have denied federal benefits to anybody in the country illegally for 10 years.”
I don’t see why anyone who did not immigrate legally should receive federal or state benefits.
There were 10,000 2 weeks ago at the LA Convention Center who were sworn in as US citizens.
What is so special about these 5 million illegals who CANT wait? You mean they are so stupid they can’t even fill in form properly?
Corker reminds me of those clueless people who let their GPS send them into a lake. In this case, it is not the GPS. It is the smell of money for their off shore bank accounts. For that they will drive their nation off the cliff.
There are good laws that would not be Amnesty. For example, secure the borders and do nothing else until the borders are actually secured in accordance with a law that is being followed. Then revise immigration enforcement so that the penalties for hiring illegals are so steep that no one will hire illegals for legal jobs, and do nothing else until the market for illegals has dried up because employing them is too costly. Then revamp the legal immigration system and do nothing else until legal immigrants have displaced any remaining illegals.
There is a lot that can be done productively and would be supported by decent Americans, none of it Amnesty. The trick? Don't reward criminal behavior.
Sorry Corker but the “demagogues” won and we also kicked Eric Cantor out on his ass. So the days of having any chance of getting an unconditional Amnesty out of Congress ARE OVER. You and Boener can cry all you want.
When you realize that Democrats want new voters and Republicans want cheap labor, they are different paths for the same result. No Republican thinks about the future. The Dems get their voters and the Pubies will get some cheap laborers, and the American people get to pay for all of it.
Corker sucker?
There are far too many politicians focused on the welfare of illegal non-citizens at the expense of those citizens they supposedly represent.
If the GOP chooses to honor the demands of its paymasters so that they can have cheap labor, then the Party is finished.
Honoring the rule of law is an essential element of the Party philosophy. The GOPe will be breaking faith not just with its base, but with it’s founding principles.
The Party can’t survive that. There will be a split, and on the other side, the establishment will be the Whigs. Any GOPe who votes for amnesty to “put it behind us” is a fool who doesn’t understand the competing forces that will shred this Party. You can obey your paymasters or your founding principles, but not both.
“Is that amnesty?”, asks Corker. Any deal that doesn’t close the border first is amnesty.
I’m as conservative hard right as you can get. Even on this forum I think you could find a consensus on dealing with the people here - once the border is closed. We’ve been fooled on this before and won’t be fooled again. Secure the border and then we’ll talk. Until then, there is no credibility to believe that any action isn’t just amnesty by another name.
“Is that amnesty?” You’ve lost the credibility to even ask that question. Close the border. That’s the only immigration reform your base wants, and it doesn’t need a new law to enact.
Senator Corker: A no-named, unfunded candidate defeated one of your Amnesty Generals in the primary by running a one-issue campaign pointing out the sitting incumbent’s statements in support of amnesty (Cantor). Marco Rubio flushed his Presidential ambitions with your gang of eight.
Put it behind you? You’re a fool.
You wonder how a state like Tennessee could elect people like this . . . and then you look at who we just elected in Georgia.
“the only word people used was amnesty.
Because that is what you are trying to do Bob.
When you do not enforce, then rewrite law to the benefit of those who break it...yeah, that’s amnesty.
Where’s the fence I was promised in 2007, numbnuts?
Senator, you can’t find illegals and visa overstayers now, so how are you going to track them over a 15 year period?
You must be a special kind of stupid.
With Republicans like these, its kinda easy to be confused about the difference.
Oh, I think Corker should show the GOP and take his gang of eight backstabbers to the other side of the aisle.
Anything short of enforcing existing immigration law IS amnesty, Corky.
Former Car Czar Rattner agrees: Now is the perfect time to raise gas tax
Steven Rattner @SteveRattner · Jan 2
Now is exactly the time to raise the gasoline tax. @SenBobCorker should be commended for his
stance http://nyti.ms/1xnVqxa
EXCERPTS
If something like this is going to be done, now is the time to do it, said Bob Corker, a Republican senator, who noted that gas prices in his home state of Tennessee fell below $2 a gallon this month. Senator Corker and Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, unveiled a proposal in June to raise the gas tax by 12 cents a gallon over the next two years and then index further increases to inflation.
(snip)
Senator Corker, who has tried to appease deficit hawks by proposing to reduce other taxes in exchange for a rise in the gas tax, said his plan would probably get caught up in negotiations about broader tax reform when the Republicans take control of both houses.
The leadership is going to want the finance committee to come up with a larger package, he said, adding that he was open to all sorts of options except a short-term fix. The one thing Im going to rail against is to kick the can down the road.
